I don't have very much time this week but I did watch the episode, and I just wanted to note that I think the Merrow Altar battle is very good one, because it's full of tension. Matt very much took advantage of the water element, the merrow people are of course in their element when the Mighty Nein are not (except for Fjord) and are fighting with disadvantage, plus the lightning spells did more damage ! Plus Nott wasn't there at the start, and The Mighty Nein rolled dog-shit for initiative = it was a difficult battle, and it was delicious !

one of my favorite things so far about rewatching the Mighty Nein is seeing how the players changed their character builds from start to finish
for example, I love seeing the transition with Caleb from direct attacks to party support once they hit level 5 as access to 3rd-level spells becomes open to him, and how that shift is also reflected in Caleb's growing relationship with the other party members and his desire to stick with this team; seeing that the other support caster, Jester, would rather be in the thick of things, he adjusts his approach to fill in that role more distinctly (Haste is the obvious grab here, but he also uses Dispel Magic to control the battlefield even early on, which is huge in helping the party survive)
he also digs deeper into the ritual spells aspect of playing a wizard, something that we saw him doing early on, but that really starts to become a character trait at this level
conversely, we see Fjord using a lot of spells that he trades out for other mechanical focuses later on down the road (Blink and Witch Bolt are ones I've noticed so far that he doesn't seem to keep for long, from what I can remember) as Travis navigates spellcasting and what he wants his warlock to look like - since that is a class that affords a lot of variety in play styles, it makes sense that he has to take some time to settle into his eventual extremely powerful niche
they may have nearly had a TPK against the merrow folk in the swamp, but the growing pains of that battle are super fascinating to analyze in hindsight
Just some quick sketches I did back when I was listening to episode 22 -when Caleb was identifying stuff and Molly got Summer's Dance- and only just now detailed a bit more.
I haven't finished ep.26 yet but I'm expecting to process everything via drawings tomorrow so I had to wrap up previous wips at least somewhat before starting something new. <3
