In addition to his absent father, Coyotesong’s mother, Maplestar, wasn’t much of a presence either. Not because she didn’t care about him but because she was just busy with her role as leader, so Coyotesong was mostly raised by his uncle and mentor Bitterbark.    Over the course of Coyotesong’s apprenticeship under Bitterbark, he realized that he didn’t want to be seen as a she-cat, and first came out to Bitterbark. Bitterbark, of course, welcomed him with open paws and helped Coyotesong pick out a new prefix for himself. It wasn’t until his assessment that he found the perfect prefix. As he worked on proving himself to his mentor, a young coyote had strayed into their territory and could potentially pose a threat to his clan and the other apprentices performing their assessments at the same time. Whether it was bravery or foolishness that had gripped him is still debatable to this day, he rushed out in the clearing the coyote was in and attacked it. It wasn’t a full frontal attack and it really didn’t take much to scare the coyote off but nonetheless, it worked. After being thoroughly scolded by his mentor for his foolishness and reprimanded accordingly, he had earned a new prefix, Coyotepaw, but for his foolhardiness, he had to retake his warrior assessment.    After getting banged up a bit by the coyote, he did spend some time in the medicine cat den, meeting Ravenfall properly, and falling for him hard. When he did recover, he tried to find any excuse to see Ravenfall, from feigning injury to offering to help collect herbs or escort Ravenfall to the sacred stream the clans go to commune with their ancestors. When Coyotesong finally received his warrior, he asked Ravenfall to be his mate.
