If anyone ever wants to know why I don’t want to continue working with kids for my entire career, watch Theo’s episode of The Haunting of Hill House. There are inaccuracies to their portrayal of the job and I’m a counselor not a psychologist sure, but her speech when she calls Trish over about the little girl in the foster system is so accurate it hurts. She saved the kid from one creep, but she’s back in the system and not saved from her situation. And now on top of whatever trauma brought her into foster care, she has yet more and further broken trust. Watching a kid go back into the system or back into the bad situation is heart wrenching. God bless those of you who can dedicate your careers to helping these kids. They need all the help they can get. My heart can’t take it.
Some techniques need big neon warning labels on them. Something like “WARNING! This technique will cause all repressed emotion and pain to resurface! Be prepared to reexperience it all, including the stuff you didn’t realize you repressed! User discretion is strongly advised!”
