Finally working on games again! :)
Here’s a gif of a noir-ish turn based shooter I’m working on for the GMTK jam this weekend.

"Roaring Streets" by cottontrek
True Matrix bullet time! Well, sort of.Â
I’ve been working on expanding the gameplay for a while. The hero now has a substantial arsenal of ways to dodge bullets: shown in the gif are wall jumps, dodge rolls (mid-air dodge rolls in fact), and a slight downward boost. All to dance around enemies and their (now time-rippling) bullets.Â
It actually kind of feels like a game now!
Fighting the Vulture Tribe!
So these guys, the Vultures, worship the Sun like the other tribes in the Mad Max-ish game, but a little differently. The Vultures believe, in order to show respect to the Sun, they must avoid using any weapons that are “imitating” it, as in explosives or flamethrowers. So a lot of them use spiky weapons or harpoons and paint their cars dark colors. The only problem is that their cars tend to explode, being powered by gasoline and all...
Whew, just finished a quick entry for the screensaver jam!

Got some stuff done on the Mad Max-ish game!
Shown in the first gif is one of the game’s bosses, basically just a spiky monster truck with a tank bolted on top of it.Â
In the second gif a couple new gameplay mechanics are in play. I added a basic ammo system (see the red boxes the player car is collecting), a weapon system, and a couple new enemy types, like the buff little truck on the bottom right.
The mines (in the first gif) and the need for ammo are ways to try to make the basic gameplay a bit more exciting, hopefully encouraging players to fight enemies a bit close up (like a strategy for the mines is to fall back and let an enemy car blow itself up in front of yours)
Finally have something presentable!
So, I finally got down a basic story and setting for the slow motion game.Â
Here’s a bit of slow motion combat happening in a little scene I just finished - the game takes place in a cyberpunk city.
Also, I made a changing light system, so the background fades based on a time variable! It’s sunrise in this gif, but the background can change to night and day.Â
Might need to add a bit of civilians walking around.
Anyway, still working on the Mad Max game, hopefully I’ll have something to show for that a bit later on!
Hey there, I saw your beautiful explosions that you posted and also your explanation. I was wondering if you could possibly go a little more in depth, for a complete noob who is combing YouTube for a tutorial that shows something like this. :) Thanks
Hey! Sorry for this super late response, by the way.
I’m still pretty much an amateur with gamemaker and thus my specific code/method is very inefficient and laggy. However, I’ll try to focus on the basic ideas that make up the effects in some of my games. (This post is pretty long, FYI)
