ok, so katipunan AU, right? already explained what the katipunan is in the post BUT IN CASE ANYONE MISSED THAT i’m going to explain it again. because i love talking about philippine history. ANYWAY. many many years ago the philippines was colonized by the spaniards and a lot of the things their government did to was very unfair (i am putting this lightly. i have many other words for this. harsh words). the katipunan was an anti-spanish revolutionary society in the late 19th century that fought for complete philippine independence.

GETTING TO THE POINT basically in the katipunan AU the amis are in the katipunan. they’re just a bunch of friends in the katipunan. they don’t replace anyone or anything, bonifacio and aguigago aguinaldo and mabini still exist, of course.

(also, head’s up: basically nothing in this AU makes sense because everyone has french names, but fuck it.)

feuilly, of course, like how everyone else headcanons, would look up to bonifacio. the ultimate bonifacio fanboy (haha, puns). bonifacio replaces poland in this au. for everyone unfamiliar with philippine history, andres bonifacio was the leader of the katipunan. his story and feuilly’s are similar; they started out as orphans selling fans on the streets. bonifacio was brave, he loved his nation with all his being, and now he was supremo. like guyssss cmon of course feuilly would admire him

(is it obvious that i have a lot of feelings about bonifacio? because i do)

MOVING ON. i think a lot of people might hc enjolras as, like, a mestizo (half-spanish), or a filipino (by that i mean its original meaning, a spaniard born in the philippines), or even a peninsulares (spaniard born in actual spain) but i dont think he would be?? i like to imagine that he came from an old family that used to be powerful before the spanish came. though his family is still wealthy and a lot of his family members know spanish fluently, including enjolras. again, it would be REALLY WEIRD considering that he has a french name, but whatever. who cares.

i feel that combeferre would be an illustrado who spent a couple of years studying in europe! not too long, though, maybe only 2-4 years? so he knows a lot of languages!! i think before he went abroad he studied in UST along with a lot of the other amis :o

one time, at a meeting, courfeyrac brought marius along. marius said something about how it’s better if everyone just fought for partial independence (like, the philippines becoming a province of spain with more autonomy) instead of complete independence bc he thinks spain Isn’t That Bad. combeferre calmly served marius’ ass with Words.

grantaire paints portraits, but he tries to distance his style from western paintings unlike other artists, so his art isn’t really that popular. he might have been considered somewhat of a genius if he painted in a more modern time. he’s anti-spanish, he knows how spanish officials and friars treat the indios, he knows that they don’t deserve this, but he doesn’t believe in the revolution. the revolution is not armed enough, the revolution is not strong enough, the revolution will never succeed.
