Carlos reaches out and wraps his fingers around the stranger’s wrist. “Please,” he whispers, forcing himself to make eye contact even though the sight of the man’s eyes, which are crimson red, has goosebumps popping up along his skin. The words ‘don’t let me die’ catch in his throat when the man bends down and gently grabs his face with ice-cold hands.
This is it, he thinks as he squeezes his eyes shut and mentally prepares for the man to snap his neck like a twig, which is a better ending than bleeding out all over the parking lot, but when he opens his eyes a few minutes later, the man is just staring at him.
“I’m sorry.” He releases Carlos’ face and jumps up, backing quickly away and out of arms reach. “I didn’t mean to,” he whispers and for a moment he looks as if he’s going to step closer, but then he shakes his head and mumbles something unintelligible under his breath before bolting.
“Hey, Siri.” He waits until his phone dings from where it’s tucked safely into his back pocket. “Call 911 on speakerphone,” he says, tears slowly sliding down his face as he listens to the ringing and he prays to whatever God there is that he doesn’t die.
“911, what’s your emergency?”
“I… was attacked by a vampire at Grey’s Diner. I think I’m dying.” Saying it out loud to another person makes the situation seem so much more… real and a fresh wave of tears start rolling down his cheeks and he lets out a choked sob.
“What is your name, sir?”
He doesn’t think about death often, but in his line of work he always has to consider the possibility that one day he might not come home from a shift, and so when he did think about it… he never imagined he’d meet his maker after being taken out by a vampire in the dimly lit parking lot of a shitty diner.
“Help is on the way, sir. I’ll stay on the line until they get there, so just… talk to me.”
“Thank you.” He breathes out slowly and lets his eyes drift close, trying to think of something to talk about but the only thing that comes to mind is his current situation. “My skin and neck were hurting.”
“Okay. What about now, Carlos?”
“Now…” he trails off, trying to focus on how to describe the feeling. “It feels… it feels like sitting in front of a fire on a cold winter night.”
“Carlos, the paramedics are almost there. Hang in there, okay?”
“I could go to sleep like this,” he whispers.
