When it's Holy Week, it's hot as the devil outside, and you're sweatin' like a sinner in church, there's not much better than this album: 'The Gilded Palace Of Sin', by the Flying Burrito Brothers, a Southern-by-way-of-Southern California band that was doing country rock before it was cool. Ex-Byrds Chris Hillman and Gram Parsons ditched McGuinn and company soon after 'Sweetheart Of The Rodeo' and continued that album's "Cosmic American" sound on this one. From the bitter, petty, and ridiculously enjoyable opening track to the mock-sacred spoken-word ending, there's nothing here that I don't love. This is an album that swings wildly from the sacred to the profane, from straight-ahead country to a cover of Aretha Franklin's "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man" with David Crosby on backing vocals. With Gram Parsons' ragged-but-soulful lead vocals and Sneaky Pete's steel guitar holding it all together, it somehow works, and works beautifully.
