Child Of Light is so close to being great and theres no better example of that than Norah
SPOILERS FOR CHILD OF LIGHT! COL is availible on all, or most, modern consoles for relatively cheap and/or on sale. I highly recommend it despite what this post may imply.
Norah is the third party member, or fourth if you got the Golem DLC which shouldnt be a DLC but thats an entirely different subject, and is Aurora's step sister! Integrated into the family after the duke married her mother.
Norah is shown to be loving, overly protective, and quite perceptive, forcing Robert to reveal his true motives, albeit very rudely, about wanting to unseal the vault inside magna. She also has flaws! Like actual character flaws, like her aforementioned rudeness or her aversion to the muck and grim of the forest or her revulsion to the mice people.
Despite this, she dosen't stop following Aurora after she agrees to help Robert, albeit she heavily disagrees with Aurora's choice due to it being a detour in their quest, she dosen't even try to sabotauge their mission while inside Magna or get in their way, despite being in the perfect position to do so.
Her design also rocks! It's this gorgeous gown thats similar to Aurora's with this little headband that always reminded me of an insect's antenna or, more likely, rabbit ears.
It even bears a striking resemblence to Aurora's outfit for when she finally becomes an adult at the end of the game! Almost like she was designed to look like what Aurora could grow into and thats such a cool character design choice for an older sibling to have!
She is also, probably, the best party member in the game! She is one of three characters with the ability to slow down enemies on the timeline, and one of two characters that can also speed you up on the timeline as well, the other being the literal last party member you get in the game! This makes her, frankly, overpowered.
This, along with the fact that she is one of five characters to have a 3d model instead of a 2d sprite, implies that she will character develop her way out of these negative traits during her journey with Aurora back home, or even that maybe Aurora's step mother isnt as evil as she seems!
However the tail end of chapter 7 happens and throws all of that out of a fucking window because fuck you for thinking this game will subvert your expectations
This is Nox, the """true""" face of Norah, who helped her mother and sister imprison Aurora at the end of chapter 7. She is a completely different charcter than Norah and unfortunately, I am being metaphorical here. She is cruel, vain, has a massive superiority complex and is nothing like Norah except in her appearance. WHY?! What happened to your dooting and over protectiveness from before?! 'It was all a lie, you fool!' Bullshit, then why'd you even swear to protect Aurora or fight with her in the first place? To get her trust?! Girl you already had that! She dosen't even feel bad about it! WHAT. A. WASTE. WHY THROW AWAY ALL OF THIS INTERESTING POTENTIAL?! FOR ANOTHER FAIRY TALE ARCHETYPE!? MOTHERFUCKER YOU ALREADY HAD CORDELIA, YOU DON'T NEED TWO EVIL STEP SISTERS YOU DULL BASTARDS!
So much potential, even if you want Norah to betray Aurora, you could've had Norah feel conflicted about having to choose which side of her family to fight for or have her betray her mother and sacrifice herself for Aurora, or have her betray her mother earlier and have her try to rekindle that bond she had with Aurora only to fail due to Norah's initial betrayel and have the rest of her time in the game trying to build back up that trust!
BUT NOOOOOO! We needed a stupid evil step sister and Norah was our only option except oh wait no you forgot about Cordelia who you killled off 30 minutes after her introduction MAX
Cordelia is the aforementioned evil step sister. Her true name is long and stupid and she's dead by the time you pronounce it. She has two scenes in total and one of them in her fucking introduction! But, like Norah, she is OOZING with potential! She makes it a point that she felt neglected by the duke and blames Aurora for it, siding with her mother for revenge. THAT IS SUCH A GOOD IDEA FOR AN EVIL STEP SISTER MOTIVE, it gives her depth and explains most of her actions! But again, they kill her off nearly immediatly afterwards because this game is allergic to good villains. What if she tried to break away from her mother and tried her own hand at villainy, or realized that Aurora's love for her was true and just as valuable, if not more, than her neglectful parents', or what if she did all that but still refused to change as a nice contrast to Aurora's constant change and growth while Cordelia could wither in stagnation?
BUT NOOOOOOO we needed a boss fight and Cordelia was right there, its not like we could've had her survive the fight and run away or anything! What'd you think this is? An RPG!? We don't have time for long and interesting plot threads! UGH
Aurora dosen't even feel all that bad after killing her! Her own damn sister! That is so out of character when her literal motivation is to save her dying father!
Their dragon forms are so cool too! Imagine if Norah rejoined the party after her betrayel and for a turn could transform into this big fuckoff leviathan at the cost of her being very slow on the timeline or a big hp penalty!
COL is infamous for it's short length despite being an RPG and most of that is undoubtly due to Ubisoft bullshit. I just wish Norah was allowed to be the great character that I know is bubbling under the surface, and not turn into the definition of character assasination: Nox.
