And THAT Cornwallis surrendered to George Washington and the American troops at the Battle of Yorktown. CORNWALLIS IS LITERALLY A REDCOAT. GRANDPA TITTY MITTY HAD A BATTLE OF YORKTOWN WITH THE LOBSTERS. Forgive me if this is common knowledge, but I’m not an American so I don’t know much about the American Revolution outside of Hamilton so this is a revelation to me 😅.
October 1781. The armies of George Washington and Rochambeau, composed of American and French troops, surrounded Yorktown, Virginia.
There, Lord Cornwallis, the British commander in chief, had entrenched himself with around 8,000 to 9,000 men.
Washington and Rochambeau were led to take action tanks to the French naval victory at the the Battle of Chesapeake (September 5, 1781).
With no escape route, Cornwallis was soon forced to request an armistice. On October 17, he asked for mild term, but ultimately had to accept unconditional surrender, which was signed on October 19
