Inspired by that post about birds with ridiculous common names: what are the weirdest fish names you’ve come across?
So there's the Dolly Varden, a trout that was named by a sixteen-year-old girl after the fashion of her dress at the time, which was in turn named after a Dickens character:
There's the spiny lumpsucker, who is correctly named:
These photos are my own, from a research trawler I was on off of Alaska!
There's the sarcastic fringehead, whose mouth is wider than it is long and who compares said mouths to establish dominance:
There are trumpetfish and their appropriately larger cousins the cornetfish, both of which are also known as flutemouths, which... sure. Also, cornetfish get up to TWO METERS LONG:
And finally, as promised, the black teatfish. Which is not a fish. It's a sea cucumber that someone apparently thought looked like it had teats, and needed a common name that contrasted as strongly as possible with its Latin name, Holothuria nobilis, or "noble sea cucumber."
If anyone reading this knows of stupid-named fish please tell me.

Daily fish fact #258
Cornetfish!
Their snouts can create a powerful suction, which they use to suck in prey! They ambush their prey the same way a seahorse does, floating very slowly — these two groups of fish are in fact related!
day 60, 23/03/24 - fish of the day is the red cornetfish (Fistularia petimba)
