Not in an I still want to be with you way, but in that way where you can’t not think about the person who was so intertwined with your life, attached at the hip, a dynamic duo, for the most crucial years of your development.

Kent isn’t lying when he says most days he doesn’t think about Jack,

But there are the days where he knows he shouldn’t lay in bed and stalk every form of social media he has for the guy.

He knows that will just make him more sad yet he can’t do anything else.

And so he scrolls;

Through his public accounts, through the private ones just for people they know, through bob and alicia’s, through the handful of samwell guys he follows,

Looking for scraps of information about how Jack is doing, what he’s up to these days.

Of course he knows the big stuff,

He knows about the center ice kiss, about how the Falcs stood behind him the whole time, about his charity work.

But he doesn’t know what documentary Jack has watched most recently and what he thinks about it, what pictures Jack has taken recently that he loves the ones that he hates, what stupid little thing is annoying him making him so happy, what dad rock song is his favorite right now.

And he knows he could reach out, that enough time has passed that the two of them have moved on, that they could probably even be friends again, that they’d probably even enjoy it,

But there’s that quiet little voice way back in the depths of his brain that whispers,

“What if he doesn’t, what if you can’t? you can’t handle that heartbreak again.”

And so he doesn’t.

And instead, when he can’t convince himself anymore that it’s not a good idea to,

jack is one of the best drivers out there because he’s focused on what he’s doing

he practices driving the robot and any spare chassies they have around all the time to keep his hands and mind sharp

they have a smaller team compared to some but they make it work because while ransom and holster are leads of two completely different aspects of the robot they are still BFFs and so they hang out all the time which actually makes the communication between the mechanical and controls groups so much better than it had ever been before them

holster is a bit of an aggressive and out there mechanical lead but he knows what he’s doing and is good at making new people feel part of the team

ransom feels so much pressure about making the controls side of things perfect, especially with such a small team, but sometimes lardo (and holster) will remind them to stay within their means and they can keep building on things year after year

ransom focuses on the navigation code primarily

he’s really good at all of the path optimization algorithms but never thinks they’re good enough himself even though they have some of the best navigation code out there

chowder focuses primarily on the vision aspect of the code

he’s really good at thinking like the computer and getting the information needed for different things out of what can be a very busy image

before dex came along they didn’t have anyone quite as good at electrical stuff as he was and so the whole team is just in shock the day that dex presents his electrical system design to the team (they all sorta know what’s up bc he had to work with them all a bit but still)

they think it’s a bit of a lofty goal bc it’s like completely redoing the system but the idea is so visually clean and it’s obvious dex knows what he’s talking about and the improvements save so much space and weight that they’re like why would we try anything else

dex also likes to machine (and is good at it) so he makes all of the housing and mounting materials for the electronics himself instead of the main mechanical guys doing that

any time they’re at an event and mention that shitty is one of their main machinists people look at them like they’re crazy bc shitty doesn’t look or act like a shop guy even though he is definitely one of the best machinists on their team

nursey on the other hand is not ever allowed in the shop because he’s so clumsy that they don’t want to risk him getting hurt
