Just because information is public doesnt mean that its free to grab and archive, especially when you can easily contact the user who owns said work 🤷
People deserve to know where their work is going and how its being used and by WHO. ESPECIALLY when they (as in the author itself) are nobodies on the internet who have such a small group of people who actually know that they exist. Their work should be respected and the author should have a say at the very least of who gets to move their information around.
Im personally honored when someone wants to archive my work and finds it super helpful! But i pour a lot of time into said works and want to at least know whos moving my stuff and how its being moved. And i dont mind if its being privately saved, i cant do anything about that. But being publicly saved and spread? Please just let me know, thats all ^^
I know that my works have value and important info, and i dont mind if people spread the word that my works are helpful. That i exist and my works are factually accurate at least to some degree (of course im still learning and growing myself, i will never be perfectly accurate). Even if my works are quoted or cited, i dont mind either!
But is it too much to ask for someone to shoot me a text about if they are going to be copying my works word for word, even with credit, to wherever? I personally dont think so.
Im not angry at anyone by the way, nor do i make this long post out of malice or spite. And i know it can be scary to contact people, but its worse to just pretend you dont even need to talk to anyone about their works; especially when our activity online is trace and finite. Who knows how much longer ill be online? I donno! But i at least deserve some sort of peace in knowing how my works were handled when i was actively online.
Information is soooo important, especially in the p-shifting communities when works disappear faster than ever. But that doesnt mean we get to throw all courtesy out the window in attempting to save said works. Its out of someones hands if the person you asked said no to their works being reuploaded. But that doesnt mean its completely unavailable to access or share access to.
(this does actually brush on a legal issue since people who write said works have copyright over them. I write this in context to recent issues me and my staff had to cover with someone lately. I didnt mind too much about my works being archived, but i just wanted to know they were and that the person who archived them did get my permission first 😭😭 especially since it was being publicly shared online beyond our small group. I dont know where my works are going after that! How they are getting taken or understood. Plus, my older works are more dated and have misinformation, i would honestly rather rewrite some of my older works instead of having them be reuploaded somewhere else.)
I apologise for such a long and sudden post on this new tumblr acc LMAO. This was my personal thought process behind a recent incident. I didnt really think that i would write this but here we are lol.
