AIO for considering this unacceptable at move-in?
Moved in to a new place and was inspecting the apartment, I found that this is the condition of the dishwasher. Was told by landlord they will not replace it. Am I being ridiculous by considering this nasty and not useable for renters? And expecting them to replace the dishwasher..? Maybe I'm going crazy or being gaslit but I would never expect people to use this with the amount of corrosion and rust.

Like someone said you could consider looking for a replacement grid instead but dont pay for it. Keep track of everything you paid for, even the batteries in the smoke detector, because you're taking it with you when you leave. It's yours. But you do have to keep the old rusty grid because its not yours. Everything you replace that isnt yours, you cant throw away (example : the old batteries in the smoke detector, the dead lighbulbs, the old rusty grid) and you have to give it back. You might think that this too much. It is lol. But a few years back my old landlord said that I threw away his property and kept my deposit :D
If you do decide to withhold rent, make sure you put the money in an Escrow account to not get evicted.
But like a lot of people have said, this will be the least of your worries. A landlord like this will never replace or fix anything and when they do it'll be weeks later....speaking from experience. Record every conversation.
Dont try to fix anything yourself, youll be liable even if you didnt cause any issues. Of course stuff like changing lightbulbs, dishwasher grid and batteries is fine, but if the sink is leaking, leave it there and document everything (when it started, when you told your landlord, when and what he answered, all communication between that and when he comes to fix it, and the date he actually fixes it)
Note: your landlord seems to be an Ahole, so take pictures of everything thats broken/damages/scratched to document that its not your fault and it was there when you moved it”
