The first real interaction Cops and Benny had wasn’t under the best of circumstances.
One of the new safety rules in Syspocalypstar is that all pilots must possess a city-certified license… And no, being a pilot or spaceman character does not mean you automatically get your license. You have to sit through the class and pass the exam just like everyone else.
Benny hates sitting in one place for hours. He just can’t do it. He hated going to school when he was small, and he hates it now. He figured that since he was a good enough pilot, he’d never be pulled over, and so he’d never need to have a license to show!
Of course… being a good pilot yourself doesn’t protect you from the stupidity of other people… After he gets into a minor crash and is caught without a license, he gets sent to take classes…
The police force all takes turns teaching the licensing class, since they’re the only ones who actually remember all the rules and regulations. Bad Cop considers himself lucky that they got scheduled during the spring, when no one usually signs up for classes, but Scribble Cop is a little disappointed…
That is, until they get a single student, who is very unhappy with his situation.
Shenanigans ensue as a frustrated Bad Cop tries to teach one of the most difficult students in the entire city. Even the mild Scribble Cop finds his patience being tested. Benny can’t focus, he can’t sit still, he tests poorly… As far as Cops are concerned, he’s the worst student they’ve ever had.
And for his part poor Benny is earthbound… So needless to day he’s feeling awful.
That is, until Scribble Cop recommends that they try teaching the class right in one of the force ships itself.
They get to see an entirely new side of the scatterbrained Benny. He’s in his element here, he’s confident and collected… and so, so happy. He’s a completely different person from the distracted, sad man in the classroom.
The first time they take off together, before they’d even left the ground… Cops had fallen in love.
