Edgar Wright executes absolute control in this cop comedy.  As with anything from Wright, it’s a masterclass in editing, with match cuts and seamless transitions galore.  Comedy is about timing, and this demonstrates that to the fullest.  Sgt Angel’s trip out to his new post, the intercutting of the cop-bro moment with the fiery inferno that was the second murder, the lot of it.

Hot Fuzz represents the inverse of Naked Gun in that it seeks to rise above the tropes of its form by being more clever than them, whereas the Z-A-Z farce collapses (intentionally) under the weight of its burden.  Where Gun simply wants the viewer to laugh at it at its expense, Fuzz winks over its shoulder at the audience, though never in an insulting fashion.  Two different ways of breaking the fourth wall.
