Monie Love - In a Word or 2 [1993; Chrysalis, Cooltempo, EMI Music Group Australasia, Warner Bros. Records]
On her second and last album, Monie Love mixes themes of relationships, self-reliance, sexuality, and justice with jazz-sourced backing loops, techno-influenced rhythms, a firmly upbeat attitude, and high-speed vocal work. Prince pops up as producer on a couple of the tracks, but DJ Marley Marl handles the majority, cutting together cool samples and flexible beats to complement Love’s energized rapping.
The new jack flavor, though it does crop up a few times (most distinctly in “Full Term Love”) is kept restrained, and the overall feel of the album is something in line with a one-woman British rendition of Salt ‘n’ Pepa. The guarded optimism and underlying righteousness do more to mark it as a product of its time than the beats, but it still holds up extremely well. From the wealth of ideas on display, it’s evident that Love could have put together more songs, but for whatever reason, this was unfortunately the end of her musical career.
Here’s the alternate cover layout.

It's Tuesday, I'm unusually in a good mood so lets have a belter. Adeva - Don't Let It Show On Your Face, the Joey Negro disco mixes. Released on the classic Cooltempo in 1992. I simply adore Joey Negro's productions from this era. They just bubble along beautifully and this is no exception. A fantastic track anyway from a seminal house diva, Mr Negro's mix is just that perfect blend of uptempo disco infused house. He has one of his signature Jeep mixes on here as well for a more laid back groove. On the flip are 2 other excellent mixes of Independent Woman by Smack & Tony Humphries. It's a superb 12" and I can't believe you can pick it up on discogs for £0.57p! I'd still play this today. So you really should check it out and add it to your collection, especially if you like Joey Negro's style.
