I'll teach you how to roll a cigarette while we're waiting. A man's got to learn that or he won't never have no way of knowing how good a store-bought is.
Chris Offutt, from Country Dark
Many of us want a better environment. Many of us want to end cruelty to animals. Many of us want to end poor labor conditions. But in our quest to save the world, we often forget the chronically ill and disabled.
I want to save the world too. I am better off than some in that my chronic illness isnt bad enough yet that I have to quit my job, but that doesn't mean it doesn't take its toll on me. By the time I'm off work I am fully out of spoons (google spoon theory if you don't know what I'm talking about), and I have to rely on convenience by going to restaurants for dinner. I would like to be vegetarian, but as any vegetarian can tell you, restaurants are difficult. So I do my best to eat as little meat when I can.
And yes, I've tried not being chronically ill. I've tried all the special diets. I've tried all the exercises (and yes, yoga doesn't always fix everything). I've tried various medications, and even tried no meds (which was a nightmare). And still sometimes I need to use a disposable bowl to eat cereal because washing a bowl would take too many spoons. I wish I did not need to rely on convenience, because convenience is expensive, and I am by no means wealthy.
Imagine being worse off than me? So what are we supposed to do, just die? I do what I can when I can. We need to understand when having these discussions that not everyone is fully capable. We need to stop blaming the chronically ill and stop calling us lazy. We want to save the world just as much as you do.

Just before baking, pearl sugar is added to this sugary, cardamom-flavored braid. Every year, my Swedish family makes this recipe in time for Christmas. Every time, but especially on Christmas morning, we enjoy it.
The Illusion of a Lot
There's so much happening in the world right now. The time between desiring something and fulfilling it has drastically shortened. The conveniences have peaked to the extent that even the time taken to bring an idea to life feels like a countdown or is tightly scheduled. Everything seems to have a time limit; like a ticking time bomb.
This relentless pace can seem contradictory to human nature. We’re constantly bombarded with demands for our attention, and it’s difficult to understand what truly matters. No wonder we feel as if we are running out of time, chances, choices, and opportunities.
However, we can choose to slow this pace down. Instead of focusing too much on the outside world, we can tune to the cues from our bodies and minds. This practice allows us to get attuned to our energy and recognize what truly needs attention.
The outside world often promises that with great time management, everything can be accomplished. But what’s the point of such management if it focuses solely on productivity, neglecting rest, rejuvenation, and the natural rhythms of each individual?
'Eyes on the stars, feet on the ground'
Whenever I feel anxious, I remind myself of this quote. It brings me back into my body, and into the present moment. Being human, we are bound to our bodies. While our minds can set seemingly limitless goals, our bodies often struggle to keep up. This constant push can lead to exhaustion as we try to meet unattainable standards—whether it’s building a career, achieving an ideal physique, or striving for any other aspiration.
This is a reminder that you are one person, with one body and one mind, and you can only do one thing at a time. Especially when it feels like you’re supposed to do everything at once.
The Perks of a Flexible Routine
It’s important to plan our days within a flexible structure. While it’s possible to accomplish many things in a day, it’s equally important to be mindful of our natural pace. Honouring these rhythms supports our well-being; it also enhances productivity and effort.
Time management that accounts for our personal cycles and energy levels allows us to bring out the best in our creative endeavours. On the other hand, pushing beyond those limits can simply lead to burnout.
When we slow down, we become mindful of our natural pace. With this, we can navigate life with clarity and balance. Productivity is valuable. However, it becomes meaningless when we aren't present to enjoy the fruit of our efforts.
