coincides
Coincidences are commonly defined as a remarkable occurrence of events or circumstances without apparent connection. The fact that she had met Benji, their disagreements and his eventual method of death were all coincidences. Y/n knew those coincidences would condemn her. Nevertheless, she stood her ground on her innocence and lack of participation or knowledge about the man. Even when the hours slowed by. Even when she wasn't allowed to eat, sleep, or even use the bathroom. Even when the clock, who's ticking noise echoed throughout the concrete room, hands finally settled on the six letting her know dawn had come; she didn't relent. Jungkook sighed, "This would all be a lot easier if you would just speak the truth." At this y/n slammed her fists on the table, "I am speaking the truth. You don't want the truth you want a version that fits your narrative. Guess what buddy, I won't give that to you." Her outbreak was unprofessional and if anything made her look more unstable, but exhaustion was clouding her judgment and she knew they couldn't detain her longer than twenty-four hours without any charges.
The inspector leaned back into his chair with a hint of a smile in the corner of his lips. Despite his young age, Jeon Jungkook proved to have a lot of potential as a police officer and Y/n was sure he would excel in anything in life if he applied a quarter of the determination he had displayed in the long hours they had spent together. Y/n had once been attracted to men who displayed the same caliber, but she usually discovered those men had an ego more fragile than a glass menagerie. "If not you, y/n. Then who? Who would have access to the same information and resources required to orchestrate this?" An angular face with a bright smile shaped into a heart flashed in her mind. "I d-don't know." The words died on her tongue towards the end, she hoped he didn't pick up on it. He did. There was a tense silence in the room before Jungkook stood up abruptly causing Y/n to wince slightly. "It seems nothing useful has been learned tonight. You may go home, Mrs. y/l/n. We'll be sure to contact you if any more information is needed." Y/n stood frozen in shock before the words finally sank in and she hastily stood. "Thank you for everything, officer." The words were meant to sound polite, but she couldn't help the sardonic undertone - nor did she really care.
The ride home was a terribly long one and all Y/n really longed for was her bed. She needed to sleep off the entire events of the evening, but it didn't help that every time she closed her eyes images of Benji's torn apart corpse haunted her. Eventually, though, exhaustion won out and her body began to slip into the delicious numbness that only sleep could deliver. Until the pounding on her front door reached her ears and her senses were in high alert once again. She jolted upright and reached for the pepper spray she kept under her pillow, it had been bought when she moved into the apartment, she recognized the dangers of a woman living alone in a crowded city. If her paranoia was high before, being so close to a murder victim had tipped it off the edge. The pounding kept getting louder and louder as a muffled voice called out to her. Once Y/n reached the door, she peeked through the peephole only to groan in frustration and roll her as eyes as she threw the door open. The man let out an exasperated sigh, "Y/n."
- Two Weeks Ago -
"Y/n."
Y/n's eyes peered up from the book only to meet with familiar hazel ones she hadn't seen in so long. "Namjoon, hi." Her smile was forced and awkward, her social anxiety peaking. The kind smile he reciprocated with only made her want to shrink up into a ball. "How are you? You look great." Out of context, it would seem like a regular opener, a bit of small talk to get reacquainted. Y/n knew better. She saw the way he looked at her and how his smile seemed to grow wider the longer they stood together. She also saw the emotions in his eyes: hope, fear, joy, anguish, love, and hate. Y/n knew she was the perpetrator behind all the inspiration and desperation Kim Namjoon had ever felt and it tore her to shreds. Not because of guilt, but because she didn't regret it a single bit. "Thank you, I've been good actually. What about you?" The sentence faltered at the ends, she didn't really want to know but she also didn't want to hurt him any more than she already had. "Me? Great. I've been great, actually I'm here for a book signing." Namjoon rambled off and reminded of Y/n of when they had first met and the mumbling mess she had been. How the tables turn. "Oh. Who's the author?" At her question, Namjoon's eyebrow quirked his tone suddenly become deeper. "Me. I am."
Y/n's eyes fell to the book in his hands. The infamous book. The one that tore them apart or so Namjoon believed - or so she had led him to believe. It was a lot easier to speak that lie than the truth: I have fallen out of love with you. "Congratulations. I know it's your dream." The tension between them was palpable, but none dared to acknowledge it. Namjoon parted his lips to speak, but Y/n interrupted him before he could utter a sound. "Listen, I have to go meet with a client. It was nice seeing you, I'll be sure to pick up the book." With that she grabbed her stuff and headed straight for the door, missing the way his eyes lingered on her back.
- Present -
"What do you want, Namjoon?!" The tall man towered over her rather small stature, but she would never see him as intimidating. "Jimin said you were at the police station all night. Are you okay?" A deep frown was settled between his brows and he spoke in a serious tone. Y/n's face twisted into an exasperated expression, "I just spent up all night trying to convince a police officer that I'm not a murderer. Do you think I'm okay?" Namjoon's eyes softened and he tried to cross the threshold only to be pushed back. "No, Namjoon. I'm tired and have had a long day." He scoffed and grabbed your hands, interlocking them with his. "I'm just trying to take care of you, Y/n. It's my responsibility." His words pissed her off even more, "No Namjoon, it's not. It's my responsibility to take care of myself. Look just go home and I'll talk to you tomorrow." She grabbed the door handle and went to close the door. "This was my home, remember?"
Tears welled in her eyes at the statement and she slammed the door shut, locking it before he could try to open it. It all finally got to her, as she began to openly sob as she fell to the living room floor. Outside in the hall, hiding in the shadows, a figure was sprawled out on the ground with his ear pressed to the apartment door actively listening in to your cries as they leaked through. Getting off on every single one of them.
