…but they didn't, and this was probably an accident, all thinks considered, and it was a manageable accident up until around 5 minutes ago. The oppressive darkness of the flooded mine and crushing weight of the water all around him are one thing, but at least he could see. He's a mer, he's got excellent night vision, and he's covered in glowing orange speckles all over his tail and sides and back. That provides more than enough light to see by, but unfortunately light is completely useless when there's a bunch of silt suspended in the water.
Sapnap knows that his panicked thrashing is not helping this situation in the slightest, seeing as it's likely only kicking up more silt, but he can't help it - it's dark down here, he can't see, his gills are getting clogged with abandoned mine muck, no one knows that he's down here (at least when he got caught against the grates Farfa found him almost immediately), and, in case he hasn't mentioned it, he can't fucking see.
