Lucina Construction Writeup
Finally got photos together! Here’s the process of making Lucina, my first handmade costume!
Wig: bought secondhand, styled in a night. I used spirit gum to hold the tails down and was super surprised it didn’t clog my pores lol. I used got to be glued styling gel and regular human hairspray.
Tiara: Craft foam with clay details, held together with hot glue which was a mistake, will replace with E6000. Painted and weathered in one night.
Tunic: Replaced the velcro neck with a zipper to protect the wig, used a wider, not shiny trim on the neck but did not have time to replace the body trim
Cape: Totally replaced the original, used suede fro the blue side, used a heavy red fabric with subtle floral details and shine on the inside, then sewed it all to the original hood and cowl. It got a lot of compliments so I won’t be changing the cape itself, but the fabric is so heavy it pulls the cowl back and chokes me… I’ll be remaking the cowl with the suede and finding a better way to attach it to the tunic.
Armor: eva foam, dremeled and painted. I really liked how they looked on their own and was super happy with weathering on it, but the proportions looked off with the overall costume and I was struggling with attaching it. (used elastic and d rings and velcro and didn’t like either) It needs to be remade smaller with more details.
Belt: really simple, just cut and sewed a long piece of pleather. I couldn’t figure out how to sew the pointed end, so I glued it all together. It’s very messy but it works.
Buckles: eva mats cut into donut shapes, then dremeled for shape. They need to be cleaned up a lot more. Painted with acrylic, but I like the weathering on one more than the other, haha.
For next time:
Make the boot cuffs
Remake the gloves
Remake the cowl
Reglue the tiara
Make brooch
Lessons learned:
Hot glue should not be used for everything under the sun
Test run your costume for more than 10 minutes to make sure it’s reasonably comfortable
Total cost was around $250, time was about 35 hours. Onto the next project!
