Ontario MP Michael Ma announced Thursday that he is leaving the Conservative caucus and joining the Liberals. Ma said in a statement that he made the decision after listening to his constituents in the riding of Markham-Unionville in the Greater Toronto Area. "This is a time for unity and decisive action for Canada's future," he wrote. "In that spirit, I have concluded that Prime Minister Mark Carney is offering the steady, practical approach we need to deliver on the priorities I hear every day while door-knocking in Markham-Unionville."

A bill aimed at prohibiting state money from reaching Planned Parenthood was among several on the Conservative Caucus legislative agenda announced Tuesday.

Del. Ben Cline, R-Rockbridge County, is carrying the bill and is committee co-chairman with Sen. Mark Obenshain, R-Harrisonburg. Cline and a fluid group of GOP legislators announced their collective agenda for the ongoing General Assembly session that includes education system and tax code changes as well as socially conservative bills, such as restricting people from legally changing their sex from that of their biological birth. The ACLU specifically challenged the gender-identity legislation Tuesday at a news conference attacking the bills as “anti-equality.”

“We’re not going to stand here and say we’re optimistic we can override a veto of any of these, but we’re going to stand up for conservative principles,” Cline said, referring to the agenda as a whole.

Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe said in his State of the Commonwealth speech last week he is “prepared to veto bills that roll back the progress that we have made on … women’s access to health care.”
