I think that the confederate flag is inappropriate on government property. It’s insensitive, ironic and disrespectful. I also believe in everyone’s person freedom to fly what ever flag they want because that’s their right as Americans. With all that said people are stepping into weird territory when is comes to the Dixie flag. On one side you have people defending it (and buying hem by the truck loads) like Obama is going to there house and ripping it from their arms. I partly understand because I too have a lot of southern pride to the point that seeing it reminds me more of good food than slavery (although lots of people used it for racism) but I understand why people will feel offended around it especially how the confederacy is depicted in most history. The other side takes the German approach and wants to band any and all symbolism. This I mainly disagree with because it takes away freedom of expression which even for a good use is misguided. One example is the defacing/taking down of confederate symbolism on memorials and battlefields. It’s as if people believe the dead doesn’t deserve respect because they fought alongside bad people. By that logic you shouldn’t respect union soldiers from that time and before due to the genocide of natives and slavery (because during the civil war slavery was still legal in the union). Another example is Warner Bros. is going to start striping he flag off toys and models of the General Lee from the t.v. series Dukes of Hazard (which was m favorite show as kid and still holds a place in my heart). The t.v. show has been around for a long time and has been a big influence on media ever since. Taking it off now is only pointless and only gives ammo to the people who are almost violently defending the Dixie flag. That’s my thoughts at least. I understand lots of people don’t share it. Like I said I understand all sides of the argument but people are going too far.
