The first thing I thought of during that BuckTommy scene when Buck said, "maybe we both have daddy issues" was the Gallavich (bc I always have them on my mind) scene "guess we have daddy issues" but then the tone completely shifted with Tommy's "I don't," and "God I hope so."
Buck was actually trying to find common ground with Tommy, thinking this'll be something they could relate toânot having good relationships with their dad. Buck smiling is him joking yes because daddy issues is a common thing people joke about.
BUT it does not automatically mean to be a sex joke.
The context is what is the issue. It was a serious, vulnerable scene. I thought we were about to get more Tommy backstory and have these two really connect but no...
Look at how the gallavich daddy issues plays out and see the difference.
They still laugh and smile, but the tone doesn't completely shift. It doesn't turn sexualânot because they aren't a horny, kinky couple (trust we know that they are, we saw it all throughout the show), but because the topic of the scene was how their relationship issues are related to how they were raised.
Like can you imagine if Ian said, "I don't [have daddy issues]...God I hope you [do]."
7 seasons of developing the Buck and Bobby father-son relationship and seeing how Buck's terrible parents affected his life, and we get his love interest saying, "your dad's still alive" when Buck called Bobby the dad he never had and then saying he hopes Buck has daddy issues...
Tldr; the context of the scene is what most people are finding issue with. Daddy issues joke: no big deal, everyone does that. Daddy kink: whatever floats your boat. Turning a vulnerable moment into a sexual one: maybe think this over. Especially when this ship already has very limited screen time and not enough meaningful development.
