2023 Keffiyeh Cup captured by Kara McCurdy
Hey guys! Here's my fourth? Project on my portfolio!
My Personal Arabia is a zine series of interviews from family members and a friend of my cousin about Yemen and Saudi Arabia. The covers are risograph printed on brown cover paper with Metallic Gold ink, and the text is printed full color inkjet on Neenah Royal Sundance Birch. They are bound with golden thread and increases according to volume; one thread for book one, two threads for book two, and so on. This zine series has been viewed at several zine fests, so the first edition covers have worn away with time and touch.
Many of these photos were sourced from relatives and friends from Yemen and Saudi Arabia. Thank you to Fatima Alhamed, Mahros Alhatri, Reem Alhatri, and Ahmed Alhatri for providing photos for the publications.
You can see the rest of the project on zainabalhatri.com/mypersonalarabia/!

Connecting Practice with Society
Art and design are not only a discipline but also a medium to express and influence society.
Our short film project in class is a great example. We use art and design techniques, including photography, typography, music, and visual effects, to present our perspectives and reflect on social issues.
In the process of group cooperation, we chose the topic of environmental health and personal quality. We collect a lot of information and then use images to convey our message. In the process, I also learned the importance of teamwork, as everyone has different insights and skills, which all have a positive impact on the final product. We discussed how to use visual messages to arouse the audience's attention to environmental issues, and learned to communicate concerns about social issues in creative ways.
Connecting Individual and Societal Change. Supporting the inner well-being of change makers can boost capacity for innovation and collaboration, and ultimately lead to more effective solutions to social and environmental challenges
As a designer, I hope that my works are not only creative, but also able to connect with society, convey information, and trigger thinking. This might mean choosing a specific theme, focusing on social issues, or using sustainable materials. I believe design can improve people's lives and solve social problems. Therefore, I strive to incorporate this belief into my practice.
The process of creating this short film made me realize that visual media can be a powerful communication tool. We learned how to use visual stories to convey an important social message, and also realized the connection and impact that practice can have on society.
