The Shared Start

Commodity codes in the UK, the EU and Canada all begin with the same six digits. That base comes from the Harmonised System, the global standard. So far they agree.

The Split

After six digits, they go their own way. The UK uses a 10-digit import code. The EU uses the eight-digit Combined Nomenclature, plus TARIC for imports. Canada extends the base with its own tariff.
