Fanfiction Commenting/ Creator Appreciation
For the past month or two I have been making sure to comment anything (no matter how small) on the fan fictions I read. I made it a little experiment/project with my irl friends too by asking them to do the same. We called it “Give creators their serotonin”
I didn’t comment to be “recognized” as I never expected the authors to reply to any of my comments. I started this back in December of 2019 as a segway to a positive new decade. I commented on over 80 fanfics since then.
My point for this whole post is for everyone to be more open to commenting. Let the author know how you feel or tell an experience that reminds you of that chapter. Be kind and remark on simple things like how you enjoy their style of writing or their characterization. Tell them if you have similar headcanons or state your favorite part of the fic. At the very least, thank them. Thank them for writing a piece of work that they worked hard on and was not paid to make. This also applies to artists and writers in general.
I know it can be nerve-wrecking at times because you don’t know if you commented the “right thing” or if the author will even enjoy it. But I guarantee that, as long as you don’t be hateful, the author will be so grateful to hear that someone loves their work as they do.
And if you don’t see any comments yet, then be the first because it will be special to the creator and may push others to comment as well. This could be that person’s first work or 1,000th but it will be just as impactful to them.
Also, don’t be discouraged if the author/creator doesn’t reply back to you. I know I love getting comments on my own and try to reply to all of them but it’s hard. Especially if you have a large quantity of comments and you are trying to reply and work on the next chapter as well. In fact, out of the 80+ I commented on only 7 got around to reply to my comment. But that is 100 percent fine because I know they have an influx of comments and life outside of fanfiction.
Thus, 2020 is the year (and possibly decade) of comments on fanfictions, comics, art and so many other things because we need to appreciate the amazing people that keep the fandoms afloat! [Give the creators their serotonin !!!]
[I don’t know if any of the authors below have Tumblrs so if you follow or know of them then tag them so I can further thank them.]
