Comics shop bags from the ‘90s
I came into curious possession of some rad comic book store bags a few days ago, which had me yearning for the Comic Defense System promo bags (white plastic with blue lettering) my local shop used between 1992-1994. I do remember the Catwoman bag… sometime in 1995 perhaps.
Pretty sure that Silver Snail bag is mid-90s.
What do you remember most about your local shop? Or what do you love most about your current comics purveyor?

Dollar bin digging. Seeing this issue of Silver Sable #1 brings back memories of the mad rush of biking all over town to all the convenience stores looking for this comic. Finally found it by chance at the store we dubbed The Hill Top. My mom’s friend had given me $10 after serving mass at her 25th wedding anniversary mass. Back then if you gave me $10 I immediately went all Rain Man and calculated how many comics and penny candies I could squeeze out of that bill. And behold, the silver-embossed cover beckoned me from the spinner rack as I walked in.

Today’s comics haul.
I’ve been living in quite a bubble over the last seven months, and as I’ve said over & over, picking up my comics pull file is one of my favourite therapeutic and sanity-maintaining weekly rituals.
This week, however, I met up with my pal Jeff, who also had some comics to pick up. We talk daily, but hadn’t seen each other since July, which feels like 8 years ago at this rate.
I realized afterwards that I couldn’t remember the last time I went to a comics shop with another person. Even going back to my childhood, I went in alone — to paraphrase an old Warren Ellis column.
The comics ritual — from purchase to reading, sorting in boxes — is such a solitary act. Was nice to have someone to share in one part of that today.

It’s established fact by now that comics were among the hardest hit businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic. A lot had to do Diamond Distributors deciding to shut down during the pandemic, halting product distribution across the board. This meant that comic shops had to get creative to stay alive, stepping way outside their comfort zones to fight against closing down for good.
