I'm literally sitting in my top surgery pre-op appointment, and all I can think about is Comic Serif.
Okay, so remember that font skeleton OC I was working on? Serif? Well, I finished designing him. I’ll probably post a pic in the future.
Basically, Serif loves comedy and making people laugh just as much as Sans does. Unlike Sans, however, Serif cannot stand puns (groan-worthy), knock-knock jokes (childish), or pranks (immature). As you can imagine, Serif hates Sans. But it’s not just Sans’ humor that frustrates him. His laziness and messiness pisses him off, too.
Serif, for the life of him, cannot understand why anyone would like Sans. In fact, he’s probably the only monster in the Underground who can’t stand our favorite jokester. While Serif and Sans have never formally met, Sans’ reputation precedes him, plus Serif has passed by his sentry posts more than a few times.
I haven’t pinned down everything about Serif’s personality and backstory yet, so I still have a lot of work to do. But we’ll see.
Comic Serif
I know it might be lame, but how can you have a graphic design inspired blog without a post about Comic Sans. Comic Sans is the world's most hated font and there are loads of blogs, clips and songs dedicated to peoples hate towards Vincent Connar's font. I will not bore you with me telling you how much I loathe the font, but I do have to admit that when my mom sent me an email in Comic Sans (because it is the funnest one out of the 11 fonts that gmail offers), it makes me smile.
When my friend posted this video about Comic Sans on her Facebook wall, I read what people commented on the video and came accross the website of Rob Mientjes. Rob is a Dutch graphic designer that created Comic Serif, the serifed brother of Comic Sans. Of course it's a joke, but i don't think this is funny at all! By designing Comic Serif, Rob hoped to shed a different light on the mocked Sans. Seriously, I dont think that is going to happen any time soon, I'm sorry! The new Comic Serif is pretty much the same as the Sans, with serifs added to every letter. The only completely redesigned letters are the A and the G.
I am not proud that this miserable typeface has to come from a Dutch graphic designer. I think us Dutch folks are better than this. To support that statement I wanted to share this amazing illustration by LouLou & Tummie, a Dutch illustration duo.
Comic Serif!
