I’m moving out of Nashville in a few months, so this is my last batch of classes! If you’ve always wanted to take a class with me- NOW IS THE TIME TO DO IT! We have three standalone classes with The Little Art House- if you’re interested in registering your young artist for those classes, please do so through The Little Art House I have two extended classes with Watkins Community Education
Comic Illustration focuses on character design and figure drawing, and is a two day weekend workshop Creating Comics is a four week workshop that takes artists through the comic planning and creation process. If you’re interested in either class, please register through Watkins Community Education. The NPL Bordeaux Branch Manga Madness class is FREE! but you may wish to let them know you’re attending. I have three Plaza classes aimed at artists of all ages, and I request that you register for those through Plaza- you can email [email protected] or call 615-254-3368 I ask that you register for any and all classes in advance, so I have time to prepare enough materials!Â
When scheduling these, I tried to make sure there was something for almost anyone interested in learning about art and comics. A lot of these are for kiddo and teen artists (Little Art House, Watkins), but I have some all ages classes with Plaza for you guys as well! And even a free class thanks to Nashville Public Library! The beauty of the paid art classes is that I can promise more one on one time for questions and critique, so if you’re looking for feedback on your art or comics, please bring in examples of your work! Â
My Making Comics class with #Nashville Community Ed begins tomorrow! Â We still have spaces left, if you'd like to learn about comic craft in a collaborative and welcoming setting! Â NCE offers affordable class options (and scholarships!) and I'm bringing in art goodies like artbooks, minicomics, zines, brushes, and nibs to get you inspired Sign up here:Â https://nce.asapconnected.com/ClassDetail.aspx?pk=1502858&
A blog post exploring the value of comic-centric modules for art and English classrooms.
As a comic artist, I am a huge advocate for comics.  I believe that there is a comic genre and an art style for every reader, and I want to help non-comic readers find a comic they can love.  I adore the juxtaposition of art and text and feel that comics are the perfect medium. Unfortunately, comics are still not taught in many classrooms and are still frequently treated like a second-class form of literature (if they're treated as literature at all).  Comics are not a replacement for novels, poetry, short fiction, or nonfiction- it is a unique medium on its own.  In some way, shape or form, comics have been with us since the dawn of time- sequential art is an important part of human history.  From cave drawings to stained glass, from altarpieces to hymnals, we have used sequential art and storytelling to convey information to those with varying degrees of literacy. Click through for more, and please reblog to help more teachers and librarians find this post! Â

Today is National Comic Book Day, and to help promote my upcoming Making Comics and Zines class through Nashville Community Education, I participated in an interview! We talk about the power of comics and zines, the egalitarianism of the medium, I show you a bit of my comic making process, and we talk about inspiration and what I’m currently reading (hint: A lot of manga and Ink Drop Cafe comics!) If you’re in the Nashville area, and you’re interested in taking a course on comic and zine making that takes you from planning to execution (and ends in a minicomic/zine exchange!), then make sure you sign up!
