Comet 45P Passes Near the Earth
A large snowball has just passed the Earth. Known as Comet 45P/Honda–Mrkos–Pajdušáková", or 45P for short, the comet came 10 times closer to Earth yesterday than the Earth ever gets to the Sun. During this passage, the comet was photographed sporting a thin ion tail and a faint but expansive green coma. The green color is caused mostly by energized molecules of carbon. Comet 45P became just bright enough to see with the unaided eye when it came closest to the Sun in December. Now, however, the comet is fading as it heads back out to near the orbit of Jupiter, where it spends most of its time. The kilometer-sized nucleus of ice and dirt will return to the inner Solar System in 2022.

February Full Moon // Snow Moon // Eclipse and Comet
It is that time of month again, the Full Moon! This month; however, holds a few tricks up its sleeve. On February 10th (into the 11th) the moon will be at her fullest. It just so happens that on this night there will be a “prenumbral lunar eclipse”. Although this eclipse is not the most noticeable, the sun, earth, and moon are still in perfect alignment. Learn more about eclipses here! There will also be a comet visible in the night sky from the 10th to 11th. This comet is only visible every 5 and ¼ year. It has been dubbed the “New Year Comet”, or Comet 45P. Read a little more about these events here. Now...on to the full moon!
What is the Snow Moon?
February’s full moon is appropriately named the Snow Moon. This is because the heaviest of snow fall usually occurs in February! This moon is a time for letting go of the past, and preparing for the future. Get your goals for the year in order, cleanse yourself and your space.
More importantly, it is a time of forgiveness. Let go of all negative feeling and look ahead. Make a conscious effort to forgive and love yourself. Preform spells of self-love, growth, and letting go.

An old comet has returned to the inner Solar System. Not only is Comet 45P/Honda–Mrkos–Pajdušáková physically ancient, it was first discovered 13 orbits ago in 1948. Comet 45P spends most of its time out near the orbit of Jupiter and last neared the Sun in 2011. Over the past few months, however, Comet 45P's new sunward plummet has brightened it considerably. Two days ago, the comet passed the closest part of its orbit to the Sun. The comet is currently visible with binoculars over the western horizon just after sunset, not far from the much brighter planet Venus. Pictured, Comet 45P was captured last week sporting a long ion tail with impressive structure. Comet 45P will pass relatively close to the Earth early next month.
