If you were wondering why many lesbians of color are fighting back against identity policing and rightfully calling it out as white supremacy, it is because this rhetoric is dangerous, harmful, and antithetical to our liberation. Invalidating lesbian manhood is rooted in antiBlackness and antiIndigeneity. Excluding lesbians of color for our race and culture is colonization in action. Excluding trans lesbians of color for our cultural gender and sexuality and for being trans in a way that subverts colonial gender systems is racist and transphobic. here is a fantastic article that talks about African gender and sexuality and highlights the existence of male lesbians or lesbian men. As an Indigenous person of triracial descent, I am proud of my Indigenous cultural gender and sexuality, and I will not allow white supremacists and queer assimilationists to erasure the history and cultures of my ancestors. Male lesbians and lesbian men are STILL HERE. We are proudly Black, Brown, and Indigenous! This is our tradition!

white non-binary people are completely unrelatable. how you gonna say you’re non-binary then invalidate other non-binary people for their identities and labels. y’all will literally force a white colonial binary onto Black and Brown non-binary men and women and then claim WE are the ones making non-binary a binary. you, my silly white bitch, are the one forcing Black and Brown people into your white binary. YOU are the one making non-binary back into the binary. this is exactly why white people can’t be non-binary. y’all literally think non-binary is a white exclusive identity when the binary you’re claiming to be outside of will always include you because of your whiteness and exclude us because of our Indigeneity. I have heard NUMEROUS Black non-binary women say they are non-binary women because their experiences are inseparable from their Black womanhood. I have heard NUMEROUS Brown people say the same thing with regard to their Indigenous manhood and/or womanhood. I am låhi yan palao’an and my experiences as a person existing outside the white colonial binary are INSEPARABLE from my låhi yan palao’an identities. “Non-binary man/woman” isn’t putting us back into the white colonial binary, white people telling us we can’t be non-binary and men and women is putting us back into the white colonial binary. stop fucking policing us and invalidating our cultural identities.

April 10, 2016 - Frustrations

The other night, as I was attempting to work on my thesis, I was looking for a podcast to listen to while I worked (I work better with something in the background, like a movie or talking, not music). I decided to type in “gender” into soundcloud search, and low and behold a podcast comes up from the Center for Race and Gender. I was immediately excited, because my thesis is all about race and gender, so I decided to give it a listen, but I was pretty quickly let down.

I just can’t deal with stuff that claims to be about gender if it doesn’t critically analyze the institutionalized gender binary... Why claim to be about gender if you’re not actually going to talk about the imposition of gender?
