I love we have two episodes where Hawkeye removed a healthy appendix. One where it is framed as the greater good and the right thing to do where he is completely backed up by Trapper, and even Flagg isn't all that bothered about the organ removal. He's kind of like: ah of course you removed my appendix to stop my scheme, makes complete sense (to be fair, it's Flagg, it probably would make sense to him).
And a second episode later where BJ is horrified when Hawkeye starts pushing for it. BJ argues that it goes against their Hippocratic oath and refuses to help. And Hawkeye goes through with it, but in the end is ashamed and the choppers coming in imply even if he prevented some casualties, cutting a healthy organ out of someone wasn't enough to prevent all of them. And whether you think Hawkeye was right or wrong, Hawkeye had to give up a piece of himself when he made that call.
MASH was seriously a show before its time. You mean to tell me that a psychiatrist, representing the pinnacle of empathy and care for those who have been hurt by ideologies beyond their control, says to a highly conservative, highly pro-government, highly pro-command literal representative of the military and absolute unquestionable authority: "yeah, I recognize that you've been indoctrinated, but the fact that you're such a garbage human being is testing even my ability to care about you"??? Like, dang. I have not resonated so hard with a line from a show... Ever? ESPECIALLY in this day and age.
