George Grosz's "Portrait of the Author Max Herrmann-Neisse" (1925) is from new release 'The Cold Gaze: Germany in the 1920s,' published to accompany the recent show on the art and culture of the Weimar Republic @louisianamuseum At the center of this volume are the Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) artists—Otto Dix, George Grosz and Albert Renger-Patzsch—and the groundbreaking photographer August Sander, in particular his famed series People of the 20th Century, which portrayed both prominent and anonymous Germans from all parts of society in a simple and matter-of-fact pictorial style. Sander and the Neue Sachlichkeit artists both pursued an anti-Expressionist aesthetic, embracing social engagement and a rejection of romantic idealism. 'The Cold Gaze' also looks at the extraordinary writers associated with the Weimar Republic, such as Vicki Baum, Bertolt Brecht, Alfred Döblin, Hans Fallada, Erich Kästner and Christopher Isherwood. Further points of focus by a range of contributing writers include Germany’s Americanization during this period; Marcel Breuer’s innovations in furniture design; the invention and ascent of the Futura font; the Weimar cult of technology; and much more. “Rose of Sharon” by San Francisco, California-based coldwave and shoegaze band topographies off of their 2020 album Ideal Form
for the first time, she recognizes him. there’s honestly no telling how many times they’ve passed by one another, how many times their money -- AND WHAT DIFFERENT MONEY IT IS -- has touched the same hand. at the very least, madison has had more than his share from them both.
she sees plenty of nice suits at tunnel ( only in passing, as they filter into the VIP area with their expensive passes and fistfuls of drink tickets ) and they all blend together the instant they cross her field of view. groups of men, all in the same suit -- 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐢𝐭❟ 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬 -- with the same haircut -- 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐮𝐭❟ 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡-𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐬 -- barely make an impression. she couldn’t remember their faces if she tried.
except his. not because he is markedly more handsome than his companions, nor because of whatever measure of charm he must think he possesses. his face is burned into her memory for what she imagines to be his proudest trait: MONEY.
“ here, ” she mutters as he passes her by, beneath the scope of his own attention until she slips a thin, two-inch bag into his hand. “ i don’t like to owe people. ”
it’s nowhere close to what he could have gotten for the cash he thrust at madison two weeks ago, just to get her out of his way, but the last thing she needs is some rich creep thinking he has something to hold over her head when he’s drunk, bored, and high.

Leeds outfit FEHM has been making quite a name for themselves back home in the UK since they released their acclaimed debut EP, Circadian Life. They now bring us a mesmeric dose of their dark angular post-punk and gazey coldwave on Last Breath, a track off their new double A-side, Last Breath / Human Age. If you’re fond of bands like Interpol, Preoccupations, White Lies, and such, like we are, you’ll find yourselves falling head over heels for FEHM’s inky glum Last Breath. The new double A-side arrives October 27th via the band’s own label, Everything Has Meaning.
THE POETRY BOOK-YOUNG MARTYRS
It seems like the more bands expand their sounds and influences, subgenres start to spawn their own subgenres. In this case the melding of shoegaze, dreampop, and coldwave has produced a field of bands labeling themselves "coldgaze". Dreamy, haunting production meets dark, detached vocals and post-punk electronics. Whatever ya call it, I'm in.
