Cold Frame Gardening
Extend or jumpstart your growing season with a cold frame structure. Cold frame can be as simple as a wooden frame with hothouse plastic, to metal frames with glass, to hoop houses with frost blankets.
My cold frame was custom built and stands roughly 3’x2.5’ and features a sloped hinged lid. I planted my seed in January and they sprouted and survived the Washington snow storm that followed. Overall my frame raises the temperature about 10 degrees. I also provide my seedlings with a heavy frost blanket if the forecast predicts night or daytime temperatures to be less than -20F.
The coldframe in closeup for those who liked the look of it. It’s not perfect - we’d ideally have made our own (whoever made this has never heard of the concept of making things square) - but it’s ok and my tomatoes seem happy so far... :) 🌱🍅❤️

Re-potted one of the guava plants and put a small bay bush into the pot the guava was in. The free chilli plant is starting to grow some new shoots. Weeded the bathtub, the chilli and bell pepper in the tub are both flowering. Frog in the pond! Green tomatoes getting bigger. The squash plants from the coldframe have a load of flowers. The coldframe has pak choi, beetroot and turnip seeds in it.

Cold Frames: The Secret To Winter Gardening
If you’re the type of food gardener that wants to enjoy a 4-season harvest, you need learn about cold frames, ASAP. That is, if you’re not already using them.
Cold frames aren’t complicated, mystical or difficult to use. They are nothing more than a basic raised bed with an old door, window or other piece of glass placed on top. These humble boxes are true gardening wonders. They can extend your salad season by months. And, cold frames will allow you to sow some of your hardier seeds directly outdoors while spring is still chilly, freeing up your indoor space for starting other, more fragile crops like tomatoes. Which is great, because seedlings get a better start when they have real sun versus artificial light. Best of all, cold frames give you the ability to grow food year round, no matter what the weather is doing outside!
