Death threats for a skeptic
Death threats for a skeptic
Unfortunately, there is little uncertainty that this would happen in the US as well.
Skeptic investigator Mark Tilbrook got in trouble with alleged psychic Sally Morgan and her husband during a 2014 performance by Mrs. Morgan in London.
Most skeptics claim that psychic are either 1. completely self-delusional or, more often than not, 2. using a mentalist technique known as “cold reading”. Cold…

Hi I'm Emily I just saw your post on advice for auditioning and do you have any tips for cold reads:) thank you
Cold reading* is actually my favorite part about auditions!  Monologues actually make me really nervous because it’s all on me, but I love being able to interact with another person, even if it’s just an auditor behind the table.
*Oh… if anyone doesn’t know what we’re talking about, a cold reading is a part of an audition where you read a “side” or a small part, from a script without preparation time.
Being able to read quickly, even if it’s just skimming, is a great skill to develop.  If you’re lucky, you’ll get the script a couple minutes before they want you to read, but I’ve had auditions where a script is thrown in my face and I’ve had to just go from there immediately.  If you need practice to work on your fluidity of reading, read out loud as much as you can.  I like to read the loading screen information in video games because I’m nerdy like that :) Â
Again, this is where reading the play* in advance is critical.  (This isn’t always possible, but if it’s a published play, do it.)  You have a huge leg up if you know who the character is, what’s going on, and what they want.  You’d be surprised by the number of people who haven’t read the play they’re auditioning for… and it shows.Â
*You may or may not be able to read the script, or sides, in advance for film or TV.  It really depends on the production.  You should be able to get general information from the character breakdown, as well as picking up information from the side you’ve been given.  If not, ask.
You need to know who you, what your relationship is with the other character(s), and what your objective is.  I know this is all Acting 101, but I can’t tell you how many times early on I was so jacked up on nerves that I forgot the basics. Â
Make sure you’re not blocking yourself off from the auditors.  This includes with the script, don’t let it creep up and cover your face.  Again, it seems obvious, but nerves make us do stupid things like stand with our backs to the auditors.  I’ve seen this at auditions, and there is no better way to shoot yourself in the foot.
If you only take away one thing, it should be this: As much as you can, make eye contact with your partner.  You likely already did a monologue, so the auditors know what you can do in your own little bubble… now they want to see how you interact with another real, live, human being.  You’re not going to be able to do that with your face buried in the lines.  A lot of people look down at the script to read their next line while their partner is speaking.  LOOK AT THEM WHILE THEY ARE SPEAKING.  You can read your line when it’s your turn, but you can’t take in and react to your partner if you’re busy reading. Â
I’m putting my producer hat on for a second here- at an audition, I would much rather see an actor who is engaged with their scene partner but doesn’t quite get their lines words perfect, than an actor who is word perfect and doesn’t react to what they’re being given by their partner.
Now, back to actor land.  I know it seems like it has been a million and one minutes since your partner spoke and you’re trying to read your next line… It’s not.  I promise.  Breathe.  Relax. Â
A little practical advise:  I like to use my thumb to keep tabs on where we are in the script, so I don’t get too lost.  When it comes to my partner’s lines, I glance down to see what their last couple words are, so that I know when it’s my turn without having to have my eyes glued to the script.
Some theaters and acting schools will offer a class just in cold reading  (if you happen to be in the DC area, I highly recommend The Theatre Lab).  This is really the best way to get better, just doing it over and over again.  I always enjoy classes because every instructor has a different method and tip to approaching auditions.
Hope some of this is helpful!
My mom just told me that she just enrolled me for an acting class next month! I'm so excited! We're gonna do audition techniques, cold readings, improv, and some scene study !! :D . I'm taking baby steps ... baby steps .... baby steps !! Yay ! :D
