Coix lacryma-jobi. Job's tears. Several years ago, my gardener friend in Pennsylvania, Nancy J. Ondra, sent me a little envelope of shiny seeds that I had never seen before. In April I sowed them in a big flower pot and up grew a not-so-interesting clump of grass. A few months later the magic began to happen. Pearls! Grey, white, black and shiny dark brown. "Near the leaves it grows... little stones, white and round as pearls, as big as a chick-pea but as hard as a stone... I have never seen anything among plants that filled me with greater wonder. So charming the adornment that one might think that the jeweller's art had arranged gleaming white pearls symmetrically among the leaves; so elegantly solved is the problem of causing a gem to grow from a plant!" Years ago, my friend Nancy J. Ondra sent me a few seeds of Coix. I will never forget opening the envelope and seeing these big, beautiful, shiny seeds inside. I have been growing them ever since. Job's tears are one of my signature seeds. People love them, and are always surprised to see how, even if they are very hard, they are easy to string together to make a necklace or bracelet. There are already holes through the seed.
