I've found that Wilbour and Hapgood translate "le crocheteur" as "porter", Denny as "dock-worker", Fahnestock and MacAfee as "stevedore", Rose as "picklock" and Donougher as "housebreaker". Okay, interesting! It seems like everyone’s going for some sort of manual-labor connection, except Rose and Donougher, who go for the criminal connection. Seems like this might be dependent on context? Anyone know?
