The Wonderful World of Tea & Cake

When you’re on holidays rules go out the window, you have your ‘holiday money’ you’ve saved to spend on luxuries which you would normally convince yourself out of, and everyone knows that calories don’t count while you’re away……..right?!

We went on holiday last year ‘up North’ around the Whitby area, and at some point each day we all looked at each other and declared that it must be tea and cake time, and off we would go hunting for the perfect little spot.   That 45 minute break where we all got our sugar hit was just what we needed to give us the energy to carry on exploring the wonderful area.  Looking back on it now that we’re 6,000 miles away and can’t get a decent cuppa and cake anywhere (coffee is well covered) I’m glad we made all those pit stops, the calories can be burnt off another day.

Well, on that note let me talk you though some of my favourite places around the surrounding area of Droxford

Bishops Waltham:

Josie’s (7am – 6pm M-F, Sat 8am-6pm, Sun 8:30am – 4pm)

Josie’s Bishops Waltham offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere

where you can find a wide range of superb coffees (my favourite is their flat white) delicious freshly made food along with a cosy but modern atmosphere.  Their food is a step up from the standard café fair (croque Monsieur and Madam is on offer along with a great full English breakfast) and once inside you’ll forget you’re in a small out of the way village and think you’ve relocated to a hipster city coffee shop.  Their 7am weekday opening times make it perfect for early holiday risers!

Wickham

Lilly’s Tea and Coffee House (9am – 4pm F-Sun, Sat 9am-5pm)

Lillys looks over the ever popular Wickham Square, the village just down the A32 along from The Crest.  Catch up with friends and family, or refuel after a long walk or ride. In the spring and summer you can catch the sun on the terrace and watch the world go by.

When the days get shorter you can warm up by the fire with a hot chocolate and slice of home made cake. Lily’s is a true English tea room with a cake selection to die for!  Once you’re all full of cake take a stroll around the village square and visit the cute little shops dotted about, don’t forget to take a left at the end of Lily’s and right round the corner to the cavern that is Chesapeake Mill which is a trove of treasures!

Botley

Elsies Traditional Tea Room (10am – 4pm M-F, Sat 10am-5pm)

A traditional, family run, cosy tearoom, vintage in style, uniquely set in a beautiful characteristic building with a vaulted ceiling and original beams. The building was originally a stable and all its’ original features have been retained and complimented by beautifully “upcycled” shabby chic furniture serving “proper tea” in pretty china cups and saucers.

Elsie’s serve a light breakfast/brunch and lunch menu complimented by either loose leaf tea or teapigs tea and an ethical blend of coffee. Homemade cakes, scones and afternoon tea are their speciality.  Elsie’s also cater for our little ones’ as well as gluten free/dairy free diets so everyone can be included!!

Located at the top of Botely High Street, heading towards Hedgend, Elsie’s stands on its’ own beside two residential listed buildings.   There is free parking all day in Mortimer Road (just passed the church, but before the school) or 3 hours free parking in Church Lane. Botely itself is a lovely little village to walk around.

Droxford

If you take a walk along the River Meon from St. Marys Church in Droxford, there is often a little stand set up just by the Water mill selling homemade cakes and jam.

We are back as a family in June and I will no doubt be adding to this article….all in the name of work of course 😉
