in general there's a reason why i pounced on it when i saw that five people out there were writing cody/maul and it's only 40% attraction to maul. the rest of it is...
it's all about cody making his own choices. a certain subset of the fandom sees him as a flat character who knows only how to obey orders and shoot blaster. another subset of the fandom sees him as only ever wanting to please obi-wan and worship obi-wan and be liked by obi-wan. but if he's truly his own person, not a wind-up soldier, not an object obi-wan owns, then he should also have room to make decisions that are objectively reckless, foolhardy and terrible (and i think his characterization allows room for that. this is the "let's tackle grievous" guy). decisions such as "i want a whirlwind romance with a wildly dangerous, fantastically horrible angry red dude whom my general actively hates"

Summary:
When Obi-Wan is declared dead, Commander Cody isnât sure heâs ready to face the rest of the war without him.
Then Jedi Master Maul Ambana is assigned as the 212thâs new General.
Cody returns with a half dead Inquisitor, dumping them in front of Maulâs throne with the air of Tooka delivering the remains of its breakfast. The Inquisitor struggles to stand, but his arms are shaking even before the Force shoves him back down. He pushes feebly back against Maul but Maul is a Sith, and these Darksiders just pretenders.
Cody steps away from his writhing prey, climbing the steps to Maulâs throne. He pulls off his helmet, hooking it to his belt beside the Inquisitorâs lightsaber. He still wears his purge trooper armour, though itâs been years since thatâs a role heâs played. Maul had given him beskar and Cody had shown up the next day in the same armour and smile playing around his mouth daring Maul to ask why.
Cody draws level with the throne, looking down at Maul. Itâs a rare angle, and one that Codyâs presence in the Force refuses to reveal if he takes pleasure in.
âI caught this skulking around, my lord,â Cody says, in that bland tone heâs so fond of. Cody is as impressive as Maul had been led to believeâwell worth the effort of stealing him away from the Empireâbut while heâd graced Maul with the required loyalty, his respect is still lacking. He says the right words and performs the right actions, but just barely buried under the surface is a challenge. It is unacceptable, but there are so few interesting people in this forsaken Galaxy that Maul allows it.
 Maul doesnât look away from the Inquisitor, but his lip curls, baring some of his teeth. He jerks his head and the lightsaber wrenches from Codyâs belt to his hand. Cody stumbles, but catches himself on the back of Maulâs throne. He lets out a rush of air thatâs as mocking as his words.
âExcellent work,â Maul says. Itâs a small, petty thing to take from the Empire, but Maul will take everything he can. Heâll make the pretender scream before dies.
He stands, Codyâs focus moving with him. The Inquisitor makes a wet sound in his throat, flopping in a growing puddle of his own blood.
Cody catches Maulâs hand, pulling him back from the Inquisitor.
Codyâs eyes are dark, Maulâs own reflection staring back from the blackness of them. Cody lifts Maulâs hand, ducking his head and pressing his lips to Maulâs knuckles. He holds Maulâs eye, opening his mouth a fraction wider, teeth scraping over skin stretched over bone. The Force comes out of Maul in an uncontrolled burst. Cody crashes to the floor, rolls, and catches himself on one knee. His dark eyes are still wide and something triumphant slips through his carefully maintained barriers.
âMy sincerest apologies, my lord.â In the Force he is all mirth and not a lick of regret. âI forgot myself.â
Maul wrenches Cody back up, the dying Inquisitor wheezing unattended at the foot of the stairs. He holds Cody off the ground, feet dangling, kicking in the air. Heâs not afraid.
âIt wonât happen again, my lord,â Cody promises, neutral and mocking and incomprehensible. He catches his lower lip between his teeth. Heâs lying. He wants Maul to know heâs lying.
Maul drops him.
âSee that it doesnât,â Maul snarls. The Inquisitorâs lightsaber bursts into life. He screams as Maul finishes the job Cody started.
The clone is an unpredictable asset, one Maul should force into line.

hello! do you have any maulsoka recs? or codymaul (but there are only 49 fics on AO3, and at least two of them are yours so at least I know where to start)?
Tragically I have yet to find a Maulsoka fic that fits the vibe for them that exists in my head, but! Several friends (and an exchange gifter) have written Codymaul that I've enjoyed! Fair warning though, a lot of them have pretty dark, "I can make him worse" vibes
