Nashville Software School: Phone Interview/Application (Part 1)
Hello, Everyone!!!!
I was overly excited about my interview with Mr. Stark! He was so much fun! I enjoyed myself so much! I felt so nervous especially with the questions that he did ask me. I too felt comfortable with the questions that I had for him in general when it came to NSS and the current and past students that attended. Ā I was nervous because I honestly did not feel I did well with answering the questions. I over analyze EVERYTHING, but I had some confidence too!!! Iām not a local of Nashville and when NSS first came about they only wanted students who were from Nashville or any part of Tennessee. Since I live in Mississippi my chances of getting in to NSS are not dismal, but they start with the applicants who are from TN. I applied for the Apprenticeship program and the Day program it last for 6 months with the exception that the person stays in Nashville and work.Which is a choice that I want to make! That is something Mr. Stark explained to me that they have to options a full time and part time which is Day or Evening sessions. If you go through the full immersive then its 6months non stop coding, peer programming, lectures, projects, etc rather than the part time session which is the choice that individuals can still work during the day and go to class at night!
The interview lasted for over and hour and in the beginning I was really nervous and towards the end I was more relaxed and confident!!!! NSS did not require me to do a technical challenge.Ā
The application process if self was very easy! I did not submit a video, but I did submit everything and once I got through with within a day or two they sent me an email telling me that I needed to pick a day and time to do the interview...well I missed the first one because I was in Gulfport for a family event so I had to reschedule!!! So, since I am an out -of-state applicant Mr. Stark says that he will let me know sometime in May if I got accepted into the July cohort or not and if not then there is another slot in October that I could get put into!!! (I donāt have to do another application or interview)
They graduate about 23 to 24 on average of students each cohort with only a handful of people may 12 people who are actually in the Apprentice Program. Now, with that being said, Iām just hoping that I get in and I will talk about Coding Dojo in another post. I did get accepted into Coding Dojo, but California is so expensive financially it will be hard to move all the way across country, find a place, and figure all of that stuff out so I think I will go for the Online option its much easier and I can save a little bit more money!!!
So its either Cali in the future and Nashville for now and work at some the companies in Nashville! I know I canāt put all of my eggs in just one or even two baskets so I am going to apply to Hack Reactor towards the end of this year! I need to brush up on my Javascript and algorithm problems!!!!!!
See you in my next post!
Wish me luck!!!
xoxo Jess
Learning & Growing: Algorithms
Algorithms!
Why do I have to learn how to do ALGORITHMS....itās essential, theĀ āblood that keeps the heart beatingā in understanding how computer programming and computer science in general, is taught since I have been accepted into Coding Dojo I have been using the AlogorithmApp, which I love and dislike at times. I donāt like it because I donāt like numbers and numbers do not like me back! We have a love and hate relationship. Math is my weakness....BUT I see algorithms in part to coding, a puzzle that I have to figure out. It may take me longer to figure out than others, but the practice and the hours that I am putting into the challenges I am quite surprised at how much I am learning and just getting the hang of it. Some I may get wrong and others I can get right on the first try, but I do love how the Coding Dojo instructors put up videos on how to properly work out each algorithm and get the answer. I love the simplicity of the teaching that the founder, Michael Choi, incorporates into each video lesson. Iām a visual learner so seeing, doing, and applying is crucial for me!!!
I am going to make a part two of thisĀ āLearning & Growing: Algorithms Series in order to hold myself accountable and making sure I understand how to solve the problem. Once, I get to San Jose in May Iām pretty sure the Coding Dojo instructors are going to want to know ifĀ āget itā and do and algorithms challenge each day for practice.
xoxo Jess
Coding bootcamp?
Finally updated my old blog here:
So what is a coding bootcamp?
From what I understand as of writing this post, coding bootcamps are short-term training programs designed to teach students one, two, or all three stacks (aka āfull-stackā) of software development, namely the LAMP, MEAN, and Rails stacks. These programs are still fairly new and emerging. Their duration ranges between 3-4 months and students will be taught to quicklyā¦
