Dalmatians were bred as hunting dogs, but found popular use as carriage dogs (walking beside carriages and protecting the inhabitants). They have a great deal of energy and can run for miles without getting tired. Dalmatian puppies are also born with plain white coats. The standard variety's short, stiff hairs often weave into carpet, clothing, upholstery, and nearly any other kind of fabric and can be difficult to remove. They often suffer from bone spurs as they get older and have a propensity for deafness. Their dramatic markings and intelligence have also made them successful circus dogs throughout the years.
