Week 1.1
Today we were introduced to our topic; Tautoko & Tuakiri: Making a Difference. The aim of the brief is to design for wellbeing. We will be required to use our skills to engage inĀ āsocial, environmental and economic issuesā, and provide a solution using not only our own designĀ practice but also the thinking of other disciplines. By engaging with others we may gain new insights, perspectives and contributions to the project. In the context of our project, Tautoko explains āa situation or condition and a designerās support or advocacy towards itā. Taukiri ācan help define the identity of the designer and where they are positioned within a society/culture.ā
These ideas are revealed as values for this project to encourage the exchange between different practitioners at COCA. Collaboration and sharing of skills, knowledge and perspectives will be important not only in the creation of a successful and insightful project but also in determining how we will, as designers, position ourselves in relation to other disciplines in contexts outside of university.
My notes in the picture above allude to the theme of the brief: Everyday Wellbeing. Our projects should eventually enable people to maintain positive everyday mental wellbeing. We will design an experience that encourages strategies for better wellbeing that can be implemented into peopleās lives. However, the solutions shouldnāt be obviously targeting a specific issue, butĀ āovertly associatedā with providing an experience that improves mental health in a subtle and positive way.
For the journey map exercise, we had to pair up and talk to one another about our holiday. The 5 strategies for everyday wellbeing are; connect, be active, take notice, keep learning and give. With these in mind we used the journey map exercise to evaluate our own, and our partner's everyday well-being over the break(see notes in the picture above).Ā
While completing the readings, I underlined pain points. These are the situations that no wellbeing strategies applied to, where discomfort and stress are present. From pain points, potential can be seen for solutions.
The link is to an open viewing folder of the test renders. Due to the maximum file storage on our Tumblr blog, Fiona couldnāt upload Evieās test renders. Hence an open sharing link to her test renders made with After Effects
Update with our MR idea/project (05.05.17)
Gathered as much research that closely inspires our idea for our Mixed Reality project.

Evieās Research on how to get kids interested in art museums
http://www.mykidsadventures.com/art-museum-fun/ This one talks about letting the kids take their own pictures of the art. This could be one way to back up our reasoning for having our app. We could incorporate a camera button which takes a snapshot of the art they are looking at if they really like it.
http://www.motherofalltrips.com/2011/06/family-travel-tips-how-to-take-kids-to-an-art-museum.html This one suggests talking to the kids about the art and asking them questions. Our app could do this so that the parents donāt have to spend heaps of time before hand researching the exhibition and coming up with their own questions. It could just make the whole outing a bit easier for them.
It also says to not try to see everything and know when to go home. Each section for the different exhibitions could say approximately how long the average person (with kids) would take to get through so that parents could choose the one that they think is most likely for their kids to not get restless during. If a parent knew their kid got bored of things after an hour then they could choose one that is about 45 minutes long.
http://theeducationaltourist.com/art-museum-tips/ The main points from this one is to tell the story behind the piece. Our app can do this with the customizable character.
Ask questions about the art. Our app can also do this as already discussed above.
It also says to create. Depending on the museum there could be a small section at the end where the kids can take their turn recreating some of the things theyāve seen. This could be combined with them talking their own pictures. They can use their pictures to copy from.
http://www.cntraveler.com/stories/2014-10-03/how-to-make-museums-fun-for-kids This one says to give them a map so that they can do the navigating. Thatās essentially what we want to do with our app. They look through it to navigate where to go.
It also says to turn it into a game and have a treasure hunt. We could have a thing at the start that's like āfind this piece of artā then they have to go through the whole exhibition to find it and snap a picture of it. Then maybe the museum could have some small prize, similar to how New World had their easter egg hunt the kids did and then got a mini egg for completing it. But it could be a small fridge magnet or badge that has the art they had to find on it. Then they have something that they can remember it with and stay excited about the art.
https://suitcasesandsandcastles.com/2017/03/21/make-museums-fun-families/ This suggests using audio guides narrated by other children. Or let them be guided by their devicesĀ
āIf youāre struggling to persuade your kids away from their devices then let them be guided around the Louvre with a Nintendo or explore the giant atlas at Londonās National Maritime Museum with a tablet which they can use to find out stories about explorers or set sail on an adventure. At the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam you can take part in a multimedia game to solve eight of the museumās mysteries.ā This is basically what we wanted for our app so itās good to know that itās an idea that should work. We just want to add another layer with the visual graphics and the animated customizable character.
