Witness the positively jungle-like landscape of northwestern Oregon. People who haven't been here probably think of giant spruce trees reaching into the sky, and we certainly have those, but there's a lot more going on at ground level. I haven't seen such lush vegetation since I was growing up in Florida, and even then Oregon trees are skyscrapers compared to what you see in the tropics, where violent storms favor ground-hugging vegetation. Amtrak's Coast Starlights in both directions meet on the south end of the Portland area if they are running on time. Today I wasn't so lucky, but I didn't have anything better to do so I sat around to make sure I caught both. Here's the northbound running just about on time after falling an hour behind down in the mountains. The schedule padding has gotten ridiculous these days.
