Prompt: Decorate
Meme: PDR 12 Days of Christmas | On Roleplayer.me
Setting: Yule time | Trestlebridge, North Downs
“Has anyone seen Hal?”
A semi innocent question but instead of the normal ‘Haven’t seen him today,’ or ‘He’s out at the moment,’ there was just a lot of sideways glances and grins. Which was unusual for the Rangers of the North. Raidon raised an eyebrow when no answer was forthcoming and finally got a response.
“Try Trestlebridge and just follow the laughter and giggles.” One of the younger newly arrived Dúnedain admitted with a small grin, flicking some glitter off his uniform.
Raidon nodded then took another look and narrowed his grey eyes a fraction. “Why do you have glitter on you?”
The other Rangers looked at each-other, before glancing back at him. “Go to Trestlebridge and you’ll find out.” They repeated with a smirk, not giving anything away.
Unlike before when he went from Esteldin to Trestlebridge, there were no interruptions on the route down and that was rather unusual in his eyes. But then he entered the town, known unofficially as the entrance to the North Downs, and paused as he looked up. “Got a tall enough tr-…? That’s not a normal tree.”
The residents of Trestlebridge, who could hear him, snickered and laughed at the clear surprise on the Ranger’s face. Because although it was a tree, it was a Walking Yule Tree.
“Afternoon Raidon. Did the others send you this way?” Hal noticed his former trainer’s approach first and straightened up from where he was helping one of the younger children to hang up a couple of glowing lights on the lower branches.
“I… yes… Hal, that’s a Huorn. Why is there a Huorn acting as a Yule Tree?”
The gender-fluid Commander of Esteldin just laughed quietly and stepped back to stand near the Annuminas Dúnedan, watching the decorating going on. “Because it’s been tradition ever since I took over command. I found it as a half grown sapling in an cut down grove and took it to Thornmane, a Ent in the Wildwood.”
“Once it got old enough, it came to say thank-you and promptly decided to get involved to cheer up some of the kids, after they lost their parents that year. And enjoyed acting as the unofficial Yule Tree, so it kept returning. Same time every year. It likes keeping the kids happy.” He tacked on at the end.
Raidon just stared- and then the Huorn turned and stared straight back. His lips twitched in an effort to keep a straight face after a moment, something that made his fellow Ranger amused. And then came the big question. “Can I help decorate?”
Hal didn’t give an reply as he was laughing too much, having known that was coming. He watched for a few minutes as the older Man was pulled over to where the younger folk were all getting involved with decorating the town for Yule. Adults, teenagers and children, even the wildlife were taking part. The Ranger was just happy to be a part of the festivities, even though his thoughts were tinged with regret of not visiting his grandfather again this year.
“Hal..? Come help us again..?”
Dark grey eyes glanced down at the almost teenager and nodded with a half smile, allowing himself to be pulled back into the friendly decorating chaos that was Trestlebridge at Yule time.

The longest wooden trestle in North America. It is 2,414ft (736m) long, and 110ft (33.5m) tall. Last night as I walked across this trestle bridge I stopped momentarily to see on the horizon a full moon approaching. Then without warning my right shoe slipped and I fell into the precipice. . . #trestlebridge #stalbert #travelalberta #fullmoon #astronomy #weirdscience #explorealberta #exploreedmonton #sturgeoncounty #bridge #panorama #landscape #precipice #falling #dream (at Trestle Bridge) https://www.instagram.com/p/COJ9T1bAQj-/?igshid=1o9jiclcn0g33
