Friday night during Canadian Music Week is a big deal, and Crown Lands and Monster Truck fans were up for the challenge.
The fans packed the venue early on and when the 9:00 PM start time came and went, the energy began to feel a little restless. But, from the moment Rushâs Closer to the Heart started they became laser-focused on the music.
Cody Bowles and Kevin Comeau have been on a steady climb, recording and releasing music, practicing and playing shows, and last night they proved theyâre more than ready to play with the big boys. The guys played songs from their debut EP Mantra, their latest release, Rise Over Run and some classic covers. Looking slick and sounding as tight as weâve ever heard them, they seem like they were born to do this. I counted ten songs in their opening set including Misery, Mountain, Scott Fitzgerald, When the Levee Breaks and more. Crown Lands ended their set with Codyâs signature drum solo, a little smoke and one of our favourites, Rushâs Working Man.

There was a bit of a wait for the switch over to happen, and the venue just continued to get fuller and fuller. The atmosphere was excited, pumped up and ready for Monster Truck.
Itâs been over a year since Monster Truck has played a show in Toronto and it looked like everyone who missed them showed up at The Phoenix on Friday night to catch up. The Hamilton-based band hit the stage and let it rip. With a full out, driving presence, they proceeded to tear through their set stopping occasionally to check in with the fans. Jon reassured the audience that the record theyâve been promising is done, and itâs coming, soon.

And it seemed like Monster Truck missed Toronto as much as Toronto missed Monster Truck. With a âgod damn it feels good to play Torontoâ and a nod to superfan Dave, Jon told us a bit about Dave. An avid fan, Dave has lost 150 lbs and was invited up on stage to play Sheâs A Witch on guitar. Dave didnât miss a note!
We were treated to lots of new music and of course, the fan favourites like The Enforcer, Seven Seas Blues, and For The Sun, and when Jon asked if Toronto was having a good time, the crowd came back with a resounding yes!
It was great to have Monster Truck in Toronto, and we hope we donât have to wait another year for the next show.
