What happens when you put five people in a room to discuss the emo revival? Lots and lots of laughs. Late last year, CMJ asked Washed Up Emo to moderate a panel to discuss the revival and we were up the task. For the panel we had a great group of young and old perspectives with Norman Brannon (Texas is the Reason, Collect Records), Kevin Duquette (Topshelf Records), Sean Moran (No Sleep Records) and Brian Pacris (The Syndicate, co-host of #EmoNightNYC). See? Emo ain't all about sadness. (Note: We only had three microphones so it may be hard to hear some questions from the audience.)

CMJ Music Marathon 2014 Report: Part 2 of 2
Being the CMJ Music Marathon, there are always plenty of bands to see, the challenge is deciding who you are going to see and working out the logistics. The first group of bands I saw was at the BMI & HD Radio sponsored showcase at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn.
The headliner was VÈRITÈ, who’s song “Weekend” I had aired just a few weeks before on my radio show, RECESS with SPINELLI. The next artist I meant to see was Alexz Johnson, but I got lost in the process of getting on the right train to Brooklyn. (I seem to have a knack of getting on the wrong trains…) Though I missed the concert, I did get the interview with her after the performance. You can listen to the full feature here: http://www.mixcloud.com/RecessWithSpinelli/recess-with-spinelli-177-alexz-johnson/
The College Radio Day was the best opportunity to meet musicians. Sounds Australia featured a number of Australian bands. Sampology, MKO, The Delta Riggs and Little May were my favorites. You can listen to my Sounds Australia feature, including interviews with these bands here: http://www.mixcloud.com/RecessWithSpinelli/recess-with-spinelli-178-sounds-australia-special-delta-riggs-mko-sampology-little-may/ The final band I saw were The Kills. This is the second time I have seen them and they did not disappoint; always an energetic performance
