it's somewhat open to interpretation, but the main themes are billy's vulnerabilities, performative masculinity, and an unstable sense of self. also some harringrove too, of course <3
even though i used clips from seasons 3 & 4, they're used more as representations of his conflicts sans mindflayer. in this *artistic expression* his possession & the upside down depict his self-sabotage through insecurity, repression, instilled shame, and rage, and the inevitable consequence- losing sight of the inner child he was fighting for by becoming exactly what his inner child fears.
