Chapter 4: fool me twice

Nagumo watched you gracefully slide into the backseat of the sleek black sedan. His gaze lingered on the taillights as the vehicle disappeared down the street, then he turned his attention back to his empty sundae cup.

Picking up his spoon, he traced the remaining swirls of chocolate sauce with a faraway look in his eyes, savouring the fleeting holy grail of comfort in a world otherwise filled with tension.

“Watch your back,” he murmured, mimicking his own words as they carried a weight heavier than the playful banter they were cloaked in. He knew better than anyone that those words carried more weight than just a casual farewell between colleagues.

He had his reasons for warning you, but voicing his unease over ice cream wasn’t the way to go—even if he knew you’d just wave it off as nothing.

Chapter 3: cherry on top

After you had thrown hands with a middle-aged woman and came out of the fight the only one injured—although she might have a sore upper lip by now—you decided to add exercise back to your list of priorities. At least, after your back was healed.

Perhaps, just perhaps, you would also eat healthier.

Or not.

You realized after dismissing Tenju that your relationship with food was healthier now than it had ever been in the past. As you stretched out your back on the yoga ball in your office with a groan, your thoughts wandered to when food started tasting good again during your school days.

Since an incident in your youth, food hadn’t tasted the same, so you didn’t mind the JCC Bowl with its odd texture and even odder taste. At this point, it was all just calories.

Despite the harshness of your life, you had never learned to shoot anything, let alone a laser gun. Today, Nagumo was there observing you, helping you to learn how to shoot. His presence added to your gun shyness, but you were determined to get a better meal, even if it was just to shut him up.

“Shouldn’t I be asking Akao or Sakamoto for help? Since, you know, they’re better at shooting than you?”

Nagumo raised an eyebrow at you, his playful smirk twitching at the corners of his mouth. “Oh, really?” he said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. “And why would you ask them when you have me, the best shot in the entire Spy Department? Besides, they suck at teaching.”

You hadn’t meant to get him so butthurt, but considering how things were, it was probably best to just give him what he wanted. Besides, you didn’t want him to get even a little bit crossed with you and sour the mood.
