Tomorrow, July 10, is the July full moon, the "Claiming Moon" in Celtic tradition (and shared with Silvergrove Moonshadow culture,đ.)
In recognition of this, here is one take on the Claiming Moon tradition in the form of an excerpt from Chapter 25, Claiming Moon, in The Dragon Prince modern AU story, Closing Gaps:
Rayla nodded, her voice laced with uncertainty. âI was wondering what you can tell me about the âClaiming Moon.â Itâs a Silvergrove tradition, isnât it?â
Whatever Ethari might have been expecting, it wasnât a question about esoteric moon rituals from their home in Xadia. He gave his niece a curious look before asking a question of his own. âWhere did that come from, Rayla?â
âWell, Kazi and Felix gave me a session with a sort of âfortune tellerâ during the summer Midterm Festival at Brae Tech, and one of the things she suggested was that I ask you about the âClaiming Moon.â The whole session was weird, to be honest, because she actually did seem to know some things that she probably shouldnât have. But since she said that the âClaiming Moonâ is this month, and the moon is almost full, I thought tonight would be a good time to ask,â Rayla explained self-consciously.
âShe said that you should ask me?â Eyebrows raised, Ethari sounded skeptical of Rayla's statement.
âWell, technically, she suggested that I ask my uncle about the âClaiming Moon,â and also said, âI donât need to tell you which uncle to ask, do I?ââ Rayla clarified. âIt was freaky.â
âI imagine that would have been freaky. And you chose wisely - this would not be a topic to discuss with Runaan,â her uncle agreed, looking thoughtful. âWhy donât you have a seat?â Ethari suggested, indicating a chair at the dining table, as he pulled out a chair for himself.
âSo the âClaiming Moonâ is one of the old traditions from The Silvergrove that occurs at midsummer, which is a time of relative comfort: temperatures are pleasant, there is fresh food coming from farms and nature, and in the olden days it would be a time of letting things grow before the hard work of harvest and the difficulties of the winter. Add to this the traditional association of the moon with dreams and illusions -and change - and you have the basis for the âClaiming Moon,ââ Ethari explained in his deep, calm voice. âThe tradition of âclaimingâ actually has two parts. On the full moon you make yourself comfortable and calm, so that you can contemplate your life and what you want to âclaimâ as your right - what is missing in your life that you feel should be yours, that you have earned ⌠that your spirit needs. Itâs not for trivial things.Â
âIn modern times people might fast, or eat only special, favorite foods. Some bathe or do a 'sweating' to cleanse themselves. Some pray or meditate.Â
âOnce you feel you are in the right frame of mind to seriously consider your life, you think about what you want to add to your life to bring fulfillment - what do you claim? What is being claimed is written down. This is often done when the moon is at its zenith, but that's not essential as long as your mind is ready.
âThe second part,â he continued, âtakes place on the new moon, when the sun and moon rise together in the morning. If the moon is about illusion and dreams, the sun is about action and outcomes - what is tangible. So on the new moon you âreleaseâ or âdeclareâ what you are claiming when the power of the sun and moon are additive - the moon for the change you desire and the sun for making it happen. The release is often carried out by burning the list, possibly with incense, although some people might just read the list aloud, if they donât want to destroy it, for example.â
âThat sounds ⌠interesting,â Rayla commented after a pause.
âIf I may offer a modern perspective,â Ethari stated, âI think the benefit of the âClaiming Moonâ observance is in calming your thoughts and being intentional about your life. If a full moon in summer helps you do this, then great, but other cultures do something very similar at the solstice, in the middle of winter. Itâs useful to stop and think about what you want from your life, but you probably donât want to get too caught up in the ritual of it. Thatâs not the important part, in my opinion. There are definitely those who disagree - I imagine that your fortune teller probably does. Disagrees, that is.â
âYeah, that makes sense,â Rayla said slowly. âI really donât know what to think about Angela - the fortune teller. She definitely had something going on that isnât easily explained."

âHey Ethari, Iâm home,â Rayla announced as she entered Destiny Stones through the door at the back of the shop. âAnything new I should know about?âÂ
âYeah. You got a letter from Kalik College,â her uncle reported. âI left it on the dining table.â
âReally? Thatâs kind of a surprise ⌠I mean, I plan to apply to Kalik, but I havenât actually contacted them yet. Iâll let you know if itâs anything interesting once Iâve had a look at it.â
With that Rayla turned and started towards the stairs leading up to their living quarters, but almost immediately reversed course and returned to the shop doorway. âSpeaking of Kalik College reminds me â we can take four off the guest list for the party tomorrow. Callum and his brother and their friends are going to meet his father at Banther Lodge for dinner instead.â
âOh, thatâs too bad,â Ethari responded, looking up from his work in surprise. âI was looking forward to Callum being here.â
Rayla shrugged, trying to downplay Callumâs absence as if he were not important to her. âI understand that he would want to see his father. I mean, they havenât seen each other all summer. Itâs the choice that I would make if I had to choose between the birthday party of someone Iâd only just met and seeing family.â

Closing Gaps, Chapter 36: How Did It End Up Like This?

Time slowed.
âSorenwhattheâNO!â
Callumâs first reaction was shock. Shock followed by a reflexive raising of his hands to force a physical separation. As he pushed on Sorenâs shoulders, however, some calmer part of his brain interceded ⌠He did not shove Soren away, which had been his first instinct.
Straightening his arms, Callum tipped his forehead to lever his mouth away from the older boyâs face. Eyes closed, he took a deep, steadying breath. âSoren ⌠this isnât ⌠I don't ... I â I like girls, Soren,â he objected, speaking with a calm that belied his distress at Soren's stolen kiss.

Dinner that night was a scrumptious affair. Amaya seemed determined to make up for missing her night to cook, cutting no corners in the preparation and presentation of red rice stuffed flounder over grilled asparagus with a black garlic vinaigrette. Janai provided dessert in the form of homemade raspberry cheesecake with mango sauce that nearly brought Claudia to tears. Only when the final crumbs of Sorenâs and Ezranâs second helpings were being picked off their plates did Callum mention Raylaâs call. Fidgeting with his fork, he straightened in his seat. âSo, Rayla invited me to her birthday next Thursday evening,â he announced. âYou guys are invited too, if you want.â
âGreat, our first party invite of the summer!â Soren enthused. âCount me in ⌠Whoâs Rayla?â
âYouâve seen her, Soren. Sheâs the white-haired barista from the bakery,â Claudia explained, her tone dismissive. âWe also met her at the beach.âÂ
