The first few weeks after “Journey’s End,” though -
Tentoo feeling overwhelming guilt over his existence, because if he hadn’t been created his other self wouldn’t be lonely, Donna wouldn’t have gotten her mind wiped, Rose would be with the Doctor she wanted, Rose wouldn’t feel abandoned, Rose wouldn’t be stuck babysitting a man who she thinks is just a copy of the one she actually loves
Tentoo lonely, with the TARDIS’s presence in the back of his mind gone
Tentoo with crippling body dysphoria some days, feeling too warm and dirty and wrong
Tentoo who is so new to all this human stuff, trying to control angry outbursts one minute and panic attacks the next
This quote from David Tennant is floating around. At first, after reading it, I was a little sadden by this because of the last part, however after thinking about it some more, I realized what was really being said. Now, to me, it makes a lot of sense. So I wanted to put my thoughts out there in the wilds of tumblr.
The quote itself should be pretty obvious. A lot of people have noticed subtle differences in the acting between Ten and his Metacrisis self. Of course there are a lot of people who also refuse to believe that the Metacrisis Doctor is really the Doctor. They say that the blue suited Doctor telling Rose he loved her was an obvious sign, since the other Doctor did not. I think those who say that do not understand that our circumstances direct our own thought processes.Â
The Metacrisis Doctor woke to different circumstances than the full Time Lord. For years the Doctor has had the burden of being the last of the Time Lords. I believe that the Doctor, when he first set out to meddle and travel, he did so to live freely and away from the stifling society of his peers. But as time continued on, he was slowly handed the safety of the universe and he had to continually be the sole person to save the day. As years past by, he lost more and more of the things that mattered to him. And the ninth and tenth Doctors carry the weight of the security of the past, present, future on his shoulders as the Last of Time Lords, never dying and never really being allowed to really enjoy a free life. When the Metacrisis knew he was part human and knew he had a limited life span, that burden was washed away. He was born anew, with options now available to him that never were before.
The Time Lord Doctor still has this burden (screw the 50th, sorry). His circumstances never changed the way it did for the Metacrisis. So of course their thought processes would be different. Different circumstances, same situation. Their reaction would obviously be different, even if they are the same man. The Doctors had a choice on Bad Wolf Bay. The Time Lord Doctor was willing to leave Rose with his other self because he still had that burden. However, had his other self never been born I believe the Doctor would not have let Rose go as easily. "[...]otherwise she would stay with the doctor forever.” This was the end part of a quote by Russell T. Davies regarding Rose's departure in Doomsday. I think the implication here is that the Doctor would have let Rose stay with him forever (or until she died). If Rose had said, "I'm coming with you." the Doctor would not have denied her.
(Tangent~ Of course, this is where the end of DT's quote saddened me for a second. He mentioned that it's ambiguous that Rose got to be with the man she loved. Just as Russell's quote is ambiguous regarding the Doctor letting Rose stay. I personally believe that the ambiguity that DT meant was that the ending of JE was to make us feel both happiness and sadness, that those were the emotions that the writing wanted us to feel and DT believed that is what should be portrayed in his acting. It worked, because while I firmly believe that Rose did end up with the man she loved, the man she loved also lost her at the same time. It's a sticky situation because it's completely and purely science fantasy where the character is literally duplicated and left with different outcomes, because that happens ALL THE TIME in real life *insert sarcasm.)
Going back, I really think the DT quote is very insightful because this is him telling us that the Metacrisis does have different thoughts because while he is the same, he is no longer the Doctor with a burden or a Doctor with the weight of the universe on his shoulders. He has many more options open to him now and with his Time Lord brain, he can think of many of them during the battle of the Crucible. It's also why I believe he destroyed the Daleks. While he now has a different future, he is mortal and many of his future possibilities (like a family with Rose) could very well be jeopardized by letting the Daleks go and even giving them a chance. That's not the only reason, because the Daleks were obviously a threat and needed to be destroyed (and I have no doubt that the Doctor, either of them, would have destroyed the Daleks in the end), the Metacrisis Doctor had more at stake. The Time Lord Doctor still has that burden and would want to lighten his load as much as possible by finding another way than the Daleks complete destruction (though in the end, it wouldn't have mattered, they would have to be destroyed).
They absolutely would have different thought processes because, in the very end, they were the same man handed two different fates and had to act accordingly.
And I love it. I love the Metacrisis Doctor because I know he is the Doctor and this is the Doctor without the BURDEN. Same may say that it takes away from his character and makes him dull, I disagree because this Doctor used to have that BURDEN, knows what it's like and knows that another him still has that burden. But he can move forward and deal with other things and go back to his original desire, to explore and wander the universe (or Pete's World for a bit until his TARDIS grew. The Doctor was given a whole brand new universe to explore! This would be like an all you can eat buffet for him!). This is a happy Doctor with new things to motivate and push his character and that excites me! I just wish we could have seen more of him (and Rose of course).
